I just have to say that Ada Lovelace is hot. What does this have to do with the above? Nothing. Which is exactly the same as your progress on it lately. Get to work! :P Ottava Rima (talk) 16:40, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Added some more. Find A Beattie's Representative Poems of William Wordsworth and H. M. Margoliouth's Wordsworth and Coleridge. Ottava Rima (talk) 15:17, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
I'm adding information from four more books, and some scattered pieces, and then I'm done. I'm holding you responsible for summaries and clean up. Okay? Okay. I'm glad we are agreed. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 14:58, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
I'm waiting. :P I need you to write summaries. Or am I doing this all myself? :P Ottava Rima (talk) 02:47, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
I finished the last of the critical sections. There is little that can be added, and most doesn't matter. We just need to focus on the short summaries of the poems in a three paragraph type format with a close reading at the beginning. Ottava Rima (talk) 20:44, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

I expanded Nebuchadnezzar (Blake) for you, so you can put it up for a DYK. I can add more if necessary. Blake's biography is on my list, after Byron, Keats, Wordsworth, Fielding, Smart, Richardson, Sterne and Burney, of course. Ottava Rima (talk) 03:26, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Are you going to list this on the DYK? Ottava Rima (talk) 03:04, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

I have some more information on The Ghost of a Flea than what I added. However, I wanted to expand some on the one quote that you put in, and put some more background on Blake's vision. I only put a tiny bit, but I thought that was most important before I take a little break. Ottava Rima (talk) 21:26, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Break for food. I added an alt nom at DYK, because your nom was 220 characters. Ottava Rima (talk) 21:37, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
  • I'm creating a page on William Wordsworth's early life in order to create a double nom with it and the Lucy poems. I should have something finished soon. However, if you could perform a plot summary on the Lucy poems, I can move it out to the main area. Ottava Rima (talk) 20:35, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Could you please create a simple summary lead for Matthew (poems). That way, I can add you for a triple nom of Wordsworth's early life, Lucy poems, and Matthew poems. Also, we need some pictures. Ottava Rima (talk) 17:41, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
As promised: here. Ottava Rima (talk) 04:20, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
I have two more sources before I have exhausted both my personal and consortium collections on the Lucy poems. Thus, there shouldn't be any problems if you want to take the page to FA. It really just needs the actual poem sections completed, anglicized completely, and a MoS check. After that, a peer review then an FA nom. I won't participate directly in the FA nom process, but it looks like you could have this all completed by the end of November. Ottava Rima (talk) 21:15, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
I formatted some of the ref information for any FAC procedure to run faster. I didn't update all of the OCLC/ISBN information though, but I did update a lot. Some of the tags are missing years. Ottava Rima (talk) 21:41, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
The style and the rest is up to you. Any content needed, you can ask. I'll put anything else I find on the talk page for you to use. Good luck. Ottava Rima (talk) 21:46, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

The Jones book is called The 'Lucy Poems' , which suggests that they are together Lucy Poems, if we want to standardize it. I don't know about the article. We could find out after the DYK goes through, put a message on the talk page suggesting a move to either Lucy Poems or The Lucy Poems, with an equal move for Matthew? Then when people come, they can weigh in. Ottava Rima (talk) 22:33, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Catherine looks to have missed her chance. You'll have to hold off until you can add 20k worth of information before she would be to be DYK'd. Ottava Rima (talk) 23:01, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

I have to say it - That picture of Dorothy could convince anyone that Wordsworth wished his sister was dead. ;/ Ottava Rima (talk) 23:43, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

The image captions should be limited to one or two lines only. Also, the "needs info" comment was to fill in the image information for Coleridge's picture, i.e. where it came from. Ottava Rima (talk) 00:13, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

www.worldcat.org can tell you what local libraries have ELH. Plus its on JSTOR. Ottava Rima (talk) 02:33, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll get if from JSTOR. I notice Google does a really bad job of indexing JSTOR; wish I had direct access! Ceoil sláinte 02:41, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Cats

[edit]

Hmm, I received a two-disc tribute to The Cure called Perfect as Cats in the mail today. This looks like it might be good. Thankfully no one dares attempt to outdo the Dinosaur Jr cover of "Just Like Heaven", because it is obvious that they would fail. WesleyDodds (talk) 08:51, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Bury the hatchet

[edit]

(copying over) The block was an honest mistake, the unblock note was a pity, and my over reaction was a bigger pity. I have a bad temper, and I flew at you, and yes I did misjudge the timeline. And I apoligise. If you accept this as sincear, I would hope we can let this behind us with no hard feelings and move on. Wikipedia is supposed to be fun, a hobby, but its easy to get mired, burned out and too involvd in detail that at the end of the day just doesn't matter. We both have the best interests of the project at heart, and I realise our squabbling does nothing at all towards that aim. And yes, no I cant spell. Ceoil sláinte 22:44, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

I would like nothing more than to wipe any tarnished slate clean and move on. Thanks for your note; I apologize again for causing a mess. Tan | 39 22:47, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Re:Sig

[edit]

Ouch, that hurts :) Well, I'm sorry, but It doesn't look right without bold, I don't see how it is annoying, I have had this signature and format with my old ones the same way. You mean No Way Out (2004) FAC.--SRX 22:59, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

.. thanks for the kind words. If you want to, you can nom it. It really needs an Africa section, though. I think it will not pass without one. There's already more than a little material on the article's Talk to start one...

Plus other folks need to be consulted.. johnbod certainly! and madman...

This is one case in which I would appreciate a co-nom nod.... The prob with this nom is that it certainly needs at least two co-noms (me and john) and maybe three (madman). It'll be a crowd up there... If you wanna nom it, then you have the privilege of working out the details. ;-)

Later! Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 23:32, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks again for the support, every step of the way.... I have a boring meeting to go to. I'll ping the other two and point them to our talk pages.. Later! Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 01:12, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

I wasn't "accusing" anyone of anything. Why are you taking this personally? The article was completely unsourced and it read like original research. Those tags aren't "pointless." They let other editors know what work needs to be done and more importantly, they let readers know that an article is not up to standard. All I saw was a deletion of quite useful tags with a flippant edit summary. So I reverted it. Now you've added some sources. The system works. Cheers. freshacconci talktalk 01:30, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

You are severly missing the point of a collerabative project. "Accusing" is exactly how thoes tags read; please be more aware of the effect of your actions. Why not add the refs your self instead of tagging and runing. And to remind you, you did say this is origional research, which goes to show how much you know. In my openion thoes tags are a cancer, and extreamly disharntining to the people who write the articles. Cheers. Ceoil sláinte 06:38, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
(YO!) Templating the top of an article with "may be O.R." and "may need references" and "may need more references" without discussing these ideas is intellectually feeble. The article "may be" original research?; so may every other. If you can't provide an argument (in terms of knowledge, in terms of time expenditure), then find a different way to contribute to Wikipedia. These templates were meant to be used sparingly for quite unusual cases. Then they somehow turned into the most counterproductive (article-related) hobby on Wikipedia, ever. Above all, using a canned edit summary that says the edit was by a program called "Friendly" is just too fucking much.
Hope you're doing fine Ceoil. You didn't respond to my brief email. I know, I'm community leper now. Erase me message from your page if ye feel dirty. Whiskeydog (talk) 06:52, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
I replied last night, Whiskey. Were working on Friedrich at last, about half ways through the bio, dreading the legacy section, as usual, ha ha. How arre things with you? Ceoil sláinte 06:54, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
Yeah I just checked after I wrote that - replied. Keep up your good works. I can't decide whether you or JanHenrí deserves a barnstar more, and I only have this single one..... Whiskeydog (talk) 07:02, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
Oh you tease. Me! Me! Ceoil sláinte 07:06, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
The problem is firefox provides handy buttons so that you can visit a page, scroll in 1-2 seconds, and make a snap jungement, hit 1 button; bam Origional research! And your off to the next article, whith a higher edit count. Jesus Christ. Ceoil sláinte 06:57, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

Portraiture of Elizabeth I

User:Johnbod and I have been expanding Portraiture of Elizabeth I and adding context, background, and transitional material. Still more work to be done (see the talk page!), but I'd appreciate it if you'd keep an eye on it and let us know if anything doesn't make sense or needs explanation. Meshuggah

[edit]

Greetings Ceoil! Some time ago you started with the prose check in the article Meshuggah. I am very near to go with the article to FAC and I just wanted to ask you if you could have a look at the rest of the article. The prose-fix is the only and last thing I want to do with this article and I really favour the way you did it. Is it possible that you find some time to finish this issue?--  LYKANTROP  20:59, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Ouch, Lykantrop, I forgot! On it now. Ceoil sláinte 21:10, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks you for resuming of your great work and great help!--  LYKANTROP  06:22, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
It will take five days or so, but I would be hopeful for this one. Best of luck. Ceoil sláinte 06:27, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
No problem, I will wait for several days until you are done. If you have some questions you can contact me or use the Wikipedia:Peer review/Meshuggah/archive2...--  LYKANTROP  13:16, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Ceoil. What about the rest of this article? You've already done more than a half!--  LYKANTROP  10:02, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Good day. Thank you for your help and participating! I highly appreciate your contributions, which strongly imroved the quality of the article. I am getting to a time pressure in my real life and I need to figure this issue out (this article). You've copy-edited the whole thing except for the 2nd and 3rd subsections of "Musical style" and the last two short sections. Now I am not sure whether there is nothing more to fix or if you still intend to do it. I really don't like to pester you with telling you to work on it. If the copy-edit is not ready, I would be very glad if you can do it, but I need some information about the situation. Could you tell me how do you see it please? --  LYKANTROP  23:39, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi Ceoil. What about this? Would you answer please?--  LYKANTROP  10:25, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi. Though I don't understand why you did't reply, I just wanted to tell you: Thank you very much for your help on that article. I appreciate very much what you've done for me, your copy editing is one of the best I've ever seen. Thank you for that your time you invested to the article - it improved Wikipedia. Good luck, Cheers :) --  LYKANTROP  12:11, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll nominate it as soon as possible. There is last thing to do before it - I need to paraphrase some quotations into prose. When that is done, then I'll go to FAC. I don't want to risk that it fails again, cause I would not go for another nomination. Cheers.--  LYKANTROP  14:22, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

drunken rant: WTF is wrong with your email???

[edit]

Today, I received an email from you dated October 18. I guarantee you that snail mail from Cork to Brooklyn would have been several times faster. GET GMAIL OR SOMETHING, for Chrissakes!! I love to gossip and backstab offwiki as much as the next guy, but a 12-day delay makes it very difficult.--The Fat Man Who Never Came Back (talk) 03:41, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Might be easier if you put down the pie, leave Brooklyn and join civilisation; instead of just bitching. I relpied, I had though? Anyway here is the jist: while I think you are a "great guy", I'm allready promise to the daughter of a farmer from two villages down. Apparently he has the finest goats in all of cork. Ceoil sláinte 03:46, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
"Tá grá agam duit sooooooo much!"
Yes, I am eating pie, as matter of fact, and I think you're just jealous. It was a red wine poached pear tart with some sort of almond liqueur and toasted pistachios from Joyce's Bakeshop in Prospect Heights. And it was fantastic. I'd ask where I could get a good pie in Cork, but it probably contains offal or fish or something. Not that there's anything wrong with that. If you no longer wish to marry me, I expect to be compensated for the wasted effort I've expended wooing you, composing Celtic jigs and mixtapes of wry 80s college rock in your honor. One idea: if that goat's as good as you say you it is, I could make you a very flavorful roti from his curried flesh. That's how we roll south of Eastern Parkway. I also enjoy cheese.
Anyhow, I'll give you a buzz if I'm ever in town, and expect you to do the same.--The Fat Man Who Never Came Back (talk) 04:02, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
You are not doing a very good job at wooing me I have to say; if that is even your intention. I'm not frigit, but damn it where is the passion? No flowers at all, and I dont ever think I've seen you dance. Turn on the magic man, spin a few old records, dress up and less of the cheap wine, and less of the "I'll give you a buzz if I'm ever in town". Ceoil sláinte 04:14, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
I would second this Gmail account. I've been waiting weeks for an email based on one contrib of yours, Ceoil, where you said you'd email a friend with JSTOR access. Well, I thought I was that friend, goddamn it, yet no email ever arrived. You know that my ability to give a JSTOR article to a friend is 2/3 of my Wikipedia self-esteem, and you've hurt it, dude. Did You Know question

Hi. I've reviewed your DYK submission for the article Jupiter and Thetis (Ingres), and made a comment on it at the submissions page. Please feel free to reply or comment there. Cheers, Art LaPella (talk) 01:40, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

My User:Art LaPella/Long hook page explains that your hook is well over the 200 character maximum, and explains why I normally don't suggest shorter versions; my main contribution is basic proofreading. But how about ... that before William Blake painted The Ghost of a Flea, the flea allegedly came at a séance and told him "fleas [are] inhabited by the souls of such men as were by nature blood thirsty to excess"? This cuts the length from 271 characters to 195. Art LaPella (talk) 04:43, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

DYK nomination

[edit]

Hi. I've nominated Nebuchadnezzar (Blake), an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles_created.2Fexpanded_on_November_1, where you can improve it if you see fit. --BorgQueen (talk) 05:03, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

New dawn fades

You have a choice: our next project together can be one of the following: Unknown Pleasures, Murmur, or Echo & the Bunnymen. Get back to to me with your choice posthaste. WesleyDodds (talk) 23:04, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

You guys missed the boat with Joy Division as the fillum has come and gone, maybe Echo and the Bunnymen are the next big thing (Spare us the cutter...dooo...doo..doooo) Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:52, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Dooo..doo...dooooo indeed! I love Murmer, but prefer Reckoning...it has Harborcoat! Ceoil sláinte 05:24, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Never realised "Never Stop" was an orphinged single...hmmm...and a 12 ". The things yer lern on WP...Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 05:32, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
bring on the headless horses whereever they may roam
He! When I were a lad, Bring On the Dancing Horses used to give me nightmares. Its so spooky its not funny. I'm listening it now, on my own in the house, and its dark outside; but Im not scared <eek> Ceoil sláinte 05:34, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Never heard that one, E&BM were never that big here in Oz...funny, I was going to make a page of Stipe-wiki, bit like User:Casliber/Flaming_Joel-wiki for the song "End of the world as we know it"...but I didn't, no-one has made any of these ones FAs recently...its like no-one respek's Billy Joel's opinion....not overly enamoured of REM..folksy guitar stuff is what my better half likes along with They Might Be Giants, Offspring, Billy Bragg, Blink 182 etc. where as I like other stuff..she was annoyed when I played Erasure's version of Solsbury Hill up loud...not that she'd ever look here as she hates WP now. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 05:42, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Without doubt this would have to be favourite song from Oz, even if the vid is a bit tacky. But what do I know, I used to like The church. Ceoil sláinte 05:45, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
"Over the Milky Way" is overrated. "Reptile" is ok, though. Pick an article soon. JD554 said he'd be up for working on Unknown Pleasures, if that helps. WesleyDodds (talk) 12:04, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
C'mon, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan. WesleyDodds (talk) 06:23, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

I liked the Church, Trifids were always highly regarded but I never was a huge fan, surprised you haven't mentioned Nick Cave by this stage, an artist of great gravitas worldwide...Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 14:14, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

PS: If you did Woodstock Festival, then Billy would be happy and who knows...Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 14:16, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Shameless aussie plugging

[edit]

Of course one band my other half and I did/do agree on is Hunters and Collectors, I saw tthem supporting the Stranglers in 1985. They really know how to make innovative videos on feck all budget --> see The Slab, note this video is one of the weirdest creepiest shamanistic things ever - talking to a Stanger, but best of all was this one - did these guys ever make it over there? Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:12, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

I was planning to link Ceoil to "Throw Your Arms Around Me" at some point. Shame shame. WesleyDodds (talk) 08:57, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Pointless bit of trivia #25 - a slab a melbourne word is a carton contaiing 24 x 375 ml cans of beer, whereas in Sydney we called it a case, but now sometimes a slab as well :) Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 09:33, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
The real question is: does everything there look like The Road Warrior yet? I need to plan a vaction soon. WesleyDodds (talk) 10:17, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
erm...The Matrix was filmed in Sydney and was a good chuckle for all us Sydneysiders seeing it in a funny tint of blue to make it look 'different'. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 10:34, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. I have been planning to take So Amazin' to FAC, but it needs a copyedit before I nominate it. The prose is okay, so hopefully it won't be a very demanding task. If you are busy, that's okay, I can wait. Thanks, Corn.u.co.pia / Disc.us.sion 06:59, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. I see that you are listed under the arts section on the peer review volunteer page. Is there any chance you could review the Art Deco article? I'd like to list it for GA once I've addressed the article's concerns. Would you be able to help? Elucidate 18:20, 5 November 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Elucidate (talkcontribs)

[edit]

Sorry- I meant to describe the edit accurately, not offend. I'm glad that Blake's finally getting so much attention- Have at it! Sorry things got so out of hand at Nebuchadnezzar, btw. I'm trying to piece together the quotes OR left into an addition to the article. Just leave his illustrations of Dante to me for now- I've already begun sandboxing it. DYK clarification needed for Jupiter and Thetis (Ingres)

[edit]

Hello! I have reviewed your submission of Jupiter and Thetis (Ingres) at the Did You Know nominations page. I noticed some issues that need to be clarified, and have left comments for you underneath your nomination's entry. Please respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! —Politizer talk/contribs 03:40, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

No problem! I also have a question about the sourcing for the hook, which I just noticed.... In the source cited (Boime 1993:206), it says that Ingres made the painting "to fulfill his annual obligations as a pensioner," whereas the hook you gave says "financial obligations"...are these the same thing? I don't know anything about the French Academy in Rome and how all that works, so I don't know what his "annual obligations as a pensioner" might have been, I just wanted to make sure that the hook is accurate. —Politizer talk/contribs 03:52, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
All I did there was add another copy of the same ref right after the information from the hook, since at the time it wasn't clear if the ref was there to verify the information about the painting's style or the information about Ingres' obligations. I'm still not too clear on what those obligations were and whether or not they were "financial" obligations...just want to make sure the information in the hook is accurate before I mark it. —Politizer talk/contribs 04:01, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure if you noticed, but I have left another comment about your submission at the DYK nominations page. —Politizer talk/contribs 14:10, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Hey Ceoil, your musings the other day just made me think we actually do share interests (sort of) in one arsing feckin' pain of an article I built up early on here but remains a gaping hole in my clean sweep aim of getting anything I work alot on to FA or GA (using them as a de facto stable version. I lack sources on for the highly-valued-and-venerated-as-essential-by-me-but-not many-other-folks cultural depictions which has held me off for a wee while..any input on the rest much appreciated..and also putting together all the shamanic stuff nicely. (DKs are quite fun too, loved too drunk to fuck) My other half likes that song, and I don't. Caspar David Friedrich

[edit]
I am moved by this painting almost as much as The Fighting Temeraire

Triffic!

  • Some of the sentences are a bit on the long side.
  • The Wreck of the Hoffnung (I'm not sure of the spelling). It's a brilliant painting and deserve an illustration. Just as many of the paintings seem to foreshadow German Expressionism, Munch and Mark Rothko, the Wreck, with its fractured surfaces, hints at the early Cubist paintings of Braque and Picasso, and in particular, Futurism. One can see the history of the ship's demise as the ice relentless crushes it. It seems to relate also to his witness of his brother's death. Amandajm (talk) 11:41, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
You're right!
I just looked at the enlargement. I've never seen the original, or looked at a large repro. Near the ship is what appears to be a frozen figure, covered with the rimey ice of the frozen sea water that has gushed up through the crevices. Although the figure is large in proportion to the ship itself, it looks sadly like a little boy. This is probably my Romantic imagination! Amandajm (talk) 11:52, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Just looked at the Magritte. Definitely. Amandajm (talk) 12:02, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it's a favourite, and I love the lovers and the moonrise. What a string of gold stars you've got! You must be more resilient to the beastly FA process than I am. I have to be careful of my blood pressure! Do you mind if I tweak the arrangement of the pics? Amandajm (talk) 12:25, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
No! It's your article! I'll just jiggle the pics! If I write anything, I'll have to find a blinking source. I'll tell you what, you can cite The Unpublished Journals of Amanda Jane Maddison, (1973). ;-) Amandajm (talk) 12:35, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, I just had a tweak at the pics, and didn't quite get them to my satisfaction. I'll see what I can do tomorrow. It's nearly midnight in the Land of Oz, and I didn't get to bed until the wee small hours yesterday.
The article is so well written, I can't imagine why you want me to write the caption. You've really expressed it all terribly well... But if you insist, I'll come back to it! Goodnight for now! Amandajm (talk) 12:55, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

For example...I had some stuff I wanted to add to the legacy section. Guess I'd better pick up the pace... Kafka Liz (talk) 18:11, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Sounds great. Which Vaughn are you using? The 2004 book has a pretty good section of CDF's legacy in general; it's been a big help. Otherwise I feel like I've missed a lot in the past couple of days... Kafka Liz (talk) 15:25, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Re Caption- I found a nice quote in Time and have dropped that into the text, but you might prefer to swapped the two quotes and have the one from time about the "frail bark of human endeavour crushed by the world's indifference" under the picture. I didn't find the author of the article, but I think what it says is great. Amandajm (talk) 10:50, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Great work!

William Blake GAN

[edit]

I don't know if you noticed amidst all the activity on Friedrich, but William Blake has been nominated for GA status [10]. I wish I had more time to devote to it- and perhaps I will over Thanksgiving- but with some work we should be able to get it up to speed. My main concern (from an initial once-over) is that there is a section for "Artistic Mindset" but none for his art in general. The list of works is incomplete, and may not belong, etc etc... Lithoderm (talk) 04:02, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Wow, there is almost nothing on his childhood, or most of his life on that page. Ottava Rima (talk) 05:04, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

[Etc Thank you] BJBot (talk) 05:21, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Speaking of Morrissey....

[edit]

Here was a rather entertaining moment on Australian TV - the ABC (australia's equivalent of BBC) plays indie/alternative and some popular music from ~1130PM to about 8AM on Friday and Saturday nights. Here Henry Rollins (who is highly regarded in Oz), who was a guest VJ on the show and got to program all the songs, gave a rather colourful opinion on Morrissey about 15 years ago. I was musing on this (and having a good chuckle) and was pleasantly surprised to find it on youtube (bless its archival little soul). I did see Rollins in concert once, and it was rather fun if I may say so myself. :) Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 05:58, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

I was in a bit of a funk earlier in the week -- too many hours spent trying to decipher German (for work; can't read it at all) can do that to you. I'll try to help with the legacy section -- I think there's a lot of good material that can be included; it's just a question of organising it properly, and I could use a day or so to mull it over. Maybe even scratch out an outline on paper. Thanks for all the work you've put in on this - it's really looking good. Kafka Liz (talk) 01:57, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

You sure? My gran was quite literally a fascist. Kafka Liz (talk) 02:27, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Good news - I've got some more references for Nash. Do we want to work it into the main article, or save it for the proposed daughter article? (not that I'll get to it tonight; I'm here and gone) Kafka Liz (talk) 01:34, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

"Only came across it yesterday for the first time"? Guess I know one thing you didn't listen to growing up... Kafka Liz (talk) 11:09, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Do you think that a dyk for this would be possible? I'm not to familiar with the requirements, but it seems to be longer than 1500 characters. Something like:

....that in The Stages of Life (pictured) Caspar David Friedrich depicted his son Gustav holding a Swedish flag because he considered himself half-Swedish?

Let me know what you think. We could, of course, expand the article further if necessary. Lithoderm (talk) 02:47, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

I'd be glad to work with you on blake over the winter holidays, by the way. Lithoderm (talk)
...that the three figures in Chalk Cliffs on Rügen, by Caspar David Friedrich, represent the Christian theological virtues?

I've nominated the first one, giving you credit for expansion. Lithoderm (talk) 19:06, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

re your suggested source-- The author of the page says that "anyone is welcome to contribute articles", and I also found this quote:

[11] Together these make me wary of it. I'm a bit worried about my suggested hook for it, as there's no citation to prove that he named his son after the swedish king. Yours might be better in that case. Lithoderm (talk) 00:09, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Ha-ha! Template talk:Did you know#Articles created/expanded on November 19 They took it anyway- my first. Lithoderm 21:53, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Tick tock tick tock.... Can you think of a decent hook for The Abbey in the Oakwood and/or The Monk by the Sea? And yes, mother, I'll get off the computer now! :D Lithoderm 20:29, 23 November 2008 (UTC) try me dude. I'm a lot tougher than I come accross, and I have no shame or embarassement quota. No, copy-editing is a big part of why I'm here, and I'm happy to help (despite fighting an impulse to add an image of this character ;) ). I have a couple of other projects in the works, but I haven't really begun them yet. Is the article pretty much complete, content-wise? Also, how do you feel about Caspar David? Pretty much done, or could use a shade more work? Kafka Liz (talk) 00:28, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Wow... Lovely stuff. Thanks. I'm definitely in. Trying to think what that reminds me of... Kafka Liz (talk) 01:04, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

tilting at windmills

[edit]
  • Ironic that you should bring up cites, because as the new WikiProject talk page as well as an essay linked on my user page both make clear, I am very firmly in the pro-cites camp. But I am even more firmly in the pro-Wikipedia, pro-Wikipedians, pro-Reason and pro-Consensus camps. [How I manage to keep my butt in so many camps at once is a matter for speculation, perhaps not all of it polite. ;-P ]
  • I would be very interested in... well, I just dunno what form or shape of essay or discussion or forum would suffice. But some sort of orientation that presents the big picture, presents both sides, I dunno. But that would be one and only one aspect of the project, at least as it exists in my imagination. ;-) Moreover, the project would a sort of respite from the {{fact}} wars; an Ashram where the pro- and anti-cites can work together to lead folks into a well-rounded perspective that draws water from both wells. Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 16:49, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
I'm coming to the conclusion that an essay about the Cite Wars may need to take this general tone: "There are two points of view on this question. Essentially, neither is exclusively correct or incorrect, although both can be taken to incorrect extremes. Sometimes as a reviewer, the important thing is not what you say, but how you say it." After that may come an exploration of the motivation for both points of view. Then perhaps a few examples may (or may not) be nice. [But that might be a little contentious... caution is advised.] The motivation part is all about trust, in my opinion. I would like to spend time developing a nuanced exploration, but essentially, the anti-cites folks are saying "I'm right, trust me" while the pro-cites folks are saying "You probably are right, and since I know you, I extend credence to your statements. The problem is, others reading the page don't know you, and Wikipedia has credibility issues out in the wild." Or something like that. These are very, very preliminary thoughts. I would really love to co-write an essay with you (and with others, as desired). The whole point is this: when n00bs nascent reviewers finish reading the essay, they may come away pro- or anti-cites. That part doesn't matter; everyone has an opinion. However, it is very important they come away being unwilling to bicker; unwilling to play the role of a Cite Warrior for either camp. They should come away with an expanded consciousness (quite seriously, although I know that sounds kinda precious or pompous or something). Let me know what you think... 02:25, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
If we were all that thoughtful, we wouldn't need the essay. :) Awadewit (talk) 05:15, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Please don't tell people I'm thoughtful, or anything like that. I'm in competition with Malleus for "B*stard of the Year". I think I may be gaining on him, but I still have a long way to go... ;-) Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 05:27, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
You can oppose my upcoming FAC over the article's title. :) (Wait 36 hours and watch the madness ensue...) Awadewit (talk) 05:30, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Re Leo business

[edit]

Thank you for your intervention! I have left a lengthy explanation on Papa November's page. You possibly aren't aware that we covered a great deal of the same ground previously, a month or so ago, and that Papa N's apparently well-meaning edits removed significant material and introduced errors on that occasion as well. I am quite surprised at this person's persistence and determination to keep rejigging this particular article, obviously with very little knowledge of the subject. My patience ran out this time around. Amandajm (talk) 13:36, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

You are quite welcome. To be fair Papa reverted himself immediatly, and was good about it. Its fustrating yes to be rehashing the same old ground over and over; I've been watching the article from a distance, usually in dismay, but think you are doing a fine job in taking it to where it is now, its such an important page. Anyway, take care. Ceoil (talk) 19:28, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Updated DYK query On 24 November, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article The Stages of Life, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Thanks! Ceoil (talk) 02:04, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the reference, It'll be useful for several of the other paintings as well! I'm hoping that we can DYK the Abbey now.. can we use quotations in the hook? You might want to look over what I've added, too. Lithoderm 02:49, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Hmmm. I rather think that we should try to work in the quote, like ...that in The Abbey in the Oakwood German painter Caspar David Friedrich symbolically depicted "the burial of Germany's hopes for resurrection"? It's vague, and makes one wonder... "how so?" Just a thought. Lithoderm 03:01, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi Ceoil, listen, I want to ask a favor. If you have time, do you think you can comment on Maggie Gyllenhaal's FAC, since there has been no feedback for a while. Trout Mask Replica

[edit]

Do you know anything about Captain Beefheart? I'm shooting ideas through my head about using the 33 1/3 book and a couple other sources I have to work on Trout Mask Replica. I can't imagine there being many Beefheart experts, let alone fans, on Wikipedia but for some reason your name popped into my head. NSR77 T 03:22, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I did mention it to him and he seems like he would be willing to help. I do have a couple other magazines, one being a Mojo (or maybe Spin?) that has some good stuff on Beefheart and the Trout Mask era. Looking through his website, there's a lot of extra help that seems to be lying around that can hopefully be used. The only thing I haven't been able to find yet are some good reviews of the record, save for Allmusic which has a fantastic and in-depth one. NSR77 T 16:18, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
I really want to find out how Beefheart came up with "fast and bulbous", perhaps the greatest fucking three-word phrase on the planet. NSR77 T 00:00, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
I find it impossible that he and the Magic Band didn't do drugs. It is simply impossible. No one could honestly think of such outlandish things without some sort of substance to warp the brain waves. He probably stopped experimenting after a while since his final three records don't give you the same "what crack was this guy smoking?" thing. NSR77 T 00:21, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Milton

[edit]
I really don't care what we use for the Dyk image, but this is more appropriate.

Well, that image is from Milton: a Poem (which would be a lot of work to expand x5), which is one of Blake's prophetic books- he wrote it as well as illustrating it. I mean Blake's illustrations to Milton's poetry, and I didn't mean which image to use for the DYK hook. My question is, should I try to cover all of that material in a single article, or narrow it down to Paradise Lost, which he illustrated most frequently. I've already begun researching on Google Books and such, and the critical precedent seems to be to treat Blake's illustrations to Milton as a single entity.[13]

By the way, my wikibreak ends on December 10th, so I'll either have to create a sockpuppet or have you create the article from what I put together. Sorry about those templates, I just can never tell if people watchlist me or not. 74.140.162.131 (talk) 01:09, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

No, it isn't a static IP, because I have edited anonymously from this computer before, and it doesn't record those edits in my contribs. And besides, I will be going back to college tomorrow, and then my IP will be entirely different. So I have a sock. By the way, here's the sandbox I've started: User:Lithoderm/Blake's Illustrations of Milton. Petropoxy (Lithoderm Proxy) (talk) 15:55, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

By the way, I just noticed that someone stubbed Satan Watching the Endearments of Adam and Eve. It really has no information in it, so it'll probably have to be redirected. Petropoxy (Lithoderm Proxy) (talk) 16:29, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

If its not too late, can we make sure to hold this off until Friday, and then we can tie it in with a DYK for Milton's reception history? See Awadewit's talk page for my general scheme about the DYK sets. Ottava Rima (talk) 00:10, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Of course! I've only just started to sandbox the article, anyway-- Lithoderm. OfOrebOrOfSinai (talk) 02:31, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
I thought, why not use the Miltonic sock I created about a month ago? Finally I have the four or so books I need to write the article, so I'll be happy to put in my small part for your plan come Friday. It sounds very ambitious. OfOrebOrOfSinai (talk) 02:59, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

"New Advent", i.e. the Catholic Encyclopedia, is of course a source of mixed reliability. I wondered what you meant, precisely. If you just meant that the source should be flagged, then I agree; attribution to the old Catholic Encyclopedia should usually be explicit. (Please leave me a talk page note if there is more to it.) Milton

[edit]

I'm going to try and talk to people and see if we can get a series of Milton related items on the main page for that day. "On this day" would be good, but if we could get that plus multiple DYK for December 9th, that would be best. I doubt we could rush a Milton related page through FA by December 9th. Ottava Rima (talk) 18:39, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Since DYK is a 5 day thing, I'm waiting until the end of this week to work on it all. An early life page would be necessary, seeing as how there are tons of "young Milton" scholars. Ottava Rima (talk) 15:38, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
I see you are also working on the John Milton page. I'm chipping away at it, trying to get a rather more accurate feel to what is said. I'm not proposing anything major, but it could be usefully expanded by quite a bit throughout. I have also created a few related articles recently (Richard Stock was his vicar in Bread Street, Eikonoklastes, Of Reformation), and have worked round related areas for a while. I'd be interested in getting a small "task force" onto it all: User:Stumps might well be interested. Charles Matthews (talk) 11:13, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

"Raft of the 'Medusa'"

[edit]

What you have there is one of Gericault's studies for a different painting. He had in mind doing a number of paintings based on the same account. He made drawings and studies for several pics. This one is earlier in the sequence, because there is a great crowd of figures, and there were ultimately only a few survivors. It is a "Raft of the Medusa" and it is by Gericault, but it's not the same Raft of the Medusa.

It has nothing to do with Michelangelo, so you need to have its name changed or delete it ASAP. In the picture of "The Flood" on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, there is a boat full of people, but quite different to this. Amandajm (talk) 05:31, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Medusa

[edit]

I wouldn't let it worry you! One cannot be expected to know everything! It would be interesting to track down the studies for the other works. I've just done a painting (not quite as large!) of one of the most famous shipwrecks off the coast of Australia, the "Dunbar". It went onto the rocks just outside Sydney Heads with 121 people onboard, of whom only one survived. I can't help thinking that the "Medusa" was a stupid name for a ship. The figurehead alone would be enough to scare the shite out of the average superstitious sailor. Ships ought to have good names like "Victory" or "Invincible". Amandajm (talk) 15:20, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I was going to say, tongue in cheek, that a ship needed a good name like "Titanic!
Here is a little tale which doesn't seem to be very well known, freaky and all as it is! There was a Mummy case in the British Museum which contained (if I remember rightly, not having read the article since about 1973) a Princess (maybe she was a priestess). All the usual sinister things happened in association with the opening of the tomb. Curses, people sickening and dying etc etc. Anyway, she apparently didn't like being in the B.M. and her ghost used to wander around annoying the curators, plaguing the nightwatchmen and scaring away the customers. She caused sufficient upset for those in charge to relegate her to the basement. On the way down the stairs, the men slipped and dropped the mummy case, which then broke the leg of one of the staff as it made its own way down to the foyer.
The mummy case was then auctioned off, and was bought by the Metropolitan Museum. After further mishaps, it was loaded onto a ship for its trans-Atlantic crossing.... and the name of the ship? .... You guessed it!

I found a really good online account of the mummy at [16]. It's a total fiction, but the man who invented the fiction actually went down on the Titanic, having told the story shortly before he died. One of the people who heard the story survived.
This story was a deliberate concoction. There is a ghost story about the "Dunbar" which didn't come into being until the 1980s and then developed into a more elaborate form and eventually became part of a collection of short stories written as a thesis for a degree in Creative writing.
The story was first told by an old man who used to sleep either under the steps of the church hall, or in the small shed that housed the engine that drove the organ blower. This habit was a real problem as the shed was tiny and if part of the man or his clothing got caught in the driving belt, the results would have been horrible. He spent his days in the cemetery with another old man, and a piebald rat by the name of Dennis.
The story goes:
The enclosure which houses the tomb of the victims of the Dunbar also has a regular stela-type tombstone on the grave of Capt. John Steane R.N. who was a passenger on the ship. Not far away is a much larger and more elaborate tomb over the grave of Captain Thomas Watson, the Harbour Master of Sydney Harbour, and his wife Hannah, who predeceased her husband.
The tomb contains a hive of ordinary domestic bees. The hive has been fumigated in case someone got stung, but the bees soon returned, and the smell of honey on a warm day is delicious. It's a bit like the bees' nest in the carcase of the lion that was turned into a riddle by Samson.
According to the old man, Hannah Watson was in love with Capt. John Steane. According to the old man, on misty nights Hannah rises from her tomb, grey and ethereal, and drifts over to the grave where she meets the ghost of her lover. This was the whole story, as originally told. The old man hanged himself from a Scots Pine near Hannah's grave, and was sadly missed by his old drinking companion.
People who had heard the story began to make connections. It was observed that Hannah died only a few days before the "Dunbar" carrying her suposed lover, went down. It is (or else isn't) a known fact that Captain Watson had a violent temper. It is a fact that he invested in trade and sometimes travelled to China. Capt. John Steane was (or wasn't) stationed in Australia. (This is probably true, since most of the passengers were Australians returning home.) The story goes that Watson returned to Australia and discovered his wife pregnant. She confessed her affair, and wrote to Steane begging him not to return because her husband threatened to kill him. Watson (who is much maligned by this story) beat up his wife who, in her "delicate condition" died a few days later, not knowing that her lover was nearing Sydney in the fast clipper ship.
Watson cursed Steane. That night, with a fair wind blowing, the "Dunbar" was seen by a coastal steamer, coming up the coast of NSW at a great pace with all its sails spread. In order to get in through Sydney Heads, it sailed north of the harbour's entrance, and turned back (usual practice, given the wind direction). No-one knows exactly what went wrong, except that it appears that a sudden storm blew up, the direction of the wind changed suddenly and the ship was driven onto the cliff face just south of the harbour mouth, right under the South Head Lighthouse. It has been suggested that the captain mistook the jutting cliffs around a formation known as "The Gap" for the entrance to the Heads. This is not very likely, if he had ever sailed into Sydney before. Anyway, it just happens that the bay on the harbour-side of South Head is called Watson's Bay, and this has given its name to the whole location, adding to the sinister story. (Apparently Watson's Bay was named after a different Watson entirely, but no matter!)
Add to this tale, an incident recorded at the time of the wreck. The Lighthouse Keeper's wife awoke from a terrible dream and told her husband that a ship was wrecked, and people were screaming. To calm her fears, he went out into the storm and saw nothing. The following day the bodies were found floating in the water. My thoughts are that he probably didn't bother to look, but merely struggled through the gale to the dunny and back. One would not really want to go peering over the cliff's edge in foul weather!
Anyway, Captain Watson, driven by remorse at the enormity of the loss that his curse had caused to the populace of Sydney, and also to turn away suspicion at the part he had played in the death of his abused wife, erected one of the grandest monuments in the cemetery over her remains.
As far as I know, there is no evidence whatsoever that Steane and Hannah were lovers. The whole tale appears to be pure invention, but it has been interesting, observing its development.

Hi there, you commented on Black Holes and Revelations FAC back in August. Your comment there was fairly accurate (about it being an amalgation of web sources). I've just got back to editing and have put the article up for peer review, and I was wondering if you could possibly expand on your reasoning there or else give some suggestions for improvement. Any help would be greatly appreciated. No worries if you're too busy. Thanks. THE GROOVE 02:46, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Dante Rating

[edit]

I am terribly sorry about the C rating mishap. We are currently working to have our template changed to get the C rating back. For the mean time, I switched all C-class poetry articles to start class so they didn't show up as not having a rating at all. It really was more of a provisional act to allow us to continue assessing articles that have no class at all without running across C class articles that registered as having no rating. I can keep the C class on the article as before if you so desire.Mrathel (talk) 19:54, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Forget it, I read from you edit summary that you were not too pleased about the rating being dropped. I honestly think that having no rating at all is better that start. Start would be a real kick in the face to editors who had brought articles to the former "C". Ceoil (talk) 19:58, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

OK, election promises include this to be played as background music for all dispute resolution pages, and this for all 24 hour blocks...and this for all folks working on LOTR pages...Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 02:08, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Lucy

[edit]

I don't mind its being without an image, although I admit it looks a bit naked now. Do you see my point, though, about her... ethereality and formlessness? I don't know if I'm being very clear here. I'm not inflexible on this; it may yet be possible to find the right female figure... I think avoiding faces is key here. There are a couple of Friedrichs that could work, but in each case they aren't quite right. His work captures the right sense of beauty and isolation/separation, though, I think. Kafka Liz (talk) 02:58, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Well, fair enough. You know I'll tell you if I think it doesn't work. :) By the way, is there anything you particularly recommend I read? I have Murray 1967, Hartman 1964 and a couple of more recent texts. I found I couldn't copyedit this one "cold", as it were. Kafka Liz (talk) 03:16, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Yep, that was me. :) Thank you, and thanks for the articles. Have you got JSTOR at last, then? Kafka Liz (talk) 03:39, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Sounds like your People's Republic is a bit different mine ;) Kafka Liz (talk) 04:06, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Got it and replied. Thanks. :) Kafka Liz (talk) 14:14, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Lucy and FA

[edit]

I had to go back and make changes that would have kept the page from making FA. Remember, we can only have images that directly deal with the page, and that the captions cannot be over a certain length. The autoformatting needs to be allowed. Plus, the Lucy poems are extremely dark and forboding. The whole basis is on the emphasis of death and his desires to have his sister die to better his own life, and the depression he feels over having these thoughts. This is literally the darkness moment of Wordsworth's life, and the Haydon painting was painted to reflect such a state of Wordsworth's being. Its the only painting that adequately represents this aspect. Ottava Rima (talk) 05:35, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Right. It was painted in 1842. The poems were written c. 1798. And you went from long captions, to NO captions. And you made the page ugly. And you obviously dont trust my jugement. Nice work there. Ceoil (talk) 11:45, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
We are both heavily invested in the article, of course we will feel passionate. Striking my reaction. Ceoil (talk) 13:35, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Happy holidays

[edit]

Clioe, because it's Christmas I want to tell you, Love, Actually-style, that I'm sorry for all the problems I caused in recent months. But I want you to know that reading articles like Caspar David Friedrich make me proud to edit here. I never tell my real friends to read up on hippos, or whatever, but just today I was telling some people about CDF, and told them to read the article here. I even ordered a CDF print for my office when it got to be 6 p.m. and I realized I wasn't getting laid off this week. Anyways, I just wanted to say thanks for making me proud to be a part of this community, and sorry for my antics, and have a great holiday. --JayHenry (talk) 06:47, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

If I may intrude, what print did you get, JayHenry? –Outriggr § 22:59, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
P.S. You have an office? You must be important. I have an office too, but only because I project "leave me alone, I need complete silence to work". And still every quarter I get an email where the big boss says they're reviewing office arrangements again. If things moved faster in my organization I'd be in a cubicle already. –Outriggr § 23:04, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
The best part is that the lights, for some reason, are on a dimmer switch. When I have to wear a suit, which isn't that often because my job's not important, I like to stay late, and put the lights about 1/3 of the way up, so it looks like expensive restaurant lighting, and sit there at my desk, and pretend I'm Jay Gatsby or something. --JayHenry (talk) 06:22, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
P.P.S. I echo JayHenry's sentiments, Ceoil (although I will not apologize for any antics). (And how does it feel to be on the receiving end of multiple talk-page edits in the space of a few minutes sir?) –Outriggr § 23:09, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
That question is loaded mr, and you know it. No I'm not a troll. Damn you to hell Outriggr, you are such a bitch. Ceoil (talk) 00:06, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm a bitch, eh? Look what you've gone and done to a perfectly nice Happy Holidays talk page section. –Outriggr § 07:00, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Oh sorry, just saw you'd asked, Outriggr. I ordered Moonrise Over the Sea. The reason is in fact a bit lame. It's that as a kid I loved the quote "A ship at harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are for". You know how sometimes you're looking to make a change and then you get a fortune cookie that affirms your idea and you're like "alright, I'm going for it." I like this picture because I sort of can't tell if the ship is sailing toward the people or away from them, and to me it conveys this vague notion that once you've set sail you're always leaving something/one behind. --JayHenry (talk) 06:07, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
Great choice, its brilliant image. "I sort of can't tell if the ship is sailing toward the people or away from them" is a nice and moving observation, and would be astute except that its unlikely they were 'backing' into the harbour! Still, the thought works for me. Ceoil (talk) 21:23, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
Wait, so we can clearly tell that we're seeing the back of the boats? It's not obvious to me which way those boats are facing, but I'm not from the British Isles like you, good friend. --JayHenry (talk) 02:02, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
No, Ceoil is wrong. They are both entering the harbor. The Bowsprit is on the Prow of the ship. If the ships were seen from behind, then the mast would be visible in front of the sail. It isn't in the nearest ship, and I'm fairly sure it it isn't in the rear ship. (I think this proves your point, anyway :)) Lithoderm 03:10, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Oh, I think you're right about the masts. I hadn't thought to look at that. The ships appear to be sailing in. --JayHenry (talk) 03:29, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Lithoderm, you have that annoying knack of always being right. Thanks anyway, and how is the studying going? Ceoil (talk) 19:12, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Hmmmmph... one more day and one more paper to write. I should probably go and do that now. Honestly, read Patrick O'Brian- great historical fiction there, with a multi-talented Irishman, yet! Lithoderm 01:41, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
Well multi-talented Irishman are 2 a penny, to be fair. See you in two days so, but here is a good song if it is pissing you off. Later. Ceoil (talk) 01:51, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

The Raft

[edit]

I eliminated some of the variations in the title, but I think you should move this back to "The Raft..." in line with the common English title and the original French, WP's dislike of "The" not withstanding. You might like to mention the Winslow Homer's The Gulf Drift and Watson and the Shark in the influences section if you are planning on expanding the article further (though you are busy fighting with Ottava right now by the look of it. Arf). Yomanganitalk 12:07, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried to page move but got some strange error msg about, whatever, didn't read it. Might need an admin to delete the redirect; ah are you still an admin by any chance? I havn't even though about influence yet, to be honest this a painting I only became aware of a few weeks back. Dont worry about Ottava, I'm only grand standing him; we both have huge investment in the page, likely it will be tears, regret and wine by sundown! Ceoil (talk) 12:14, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Done by a freindy admin. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:53, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

One degree of separation between FAs

[edit]

This paper says there is a fly agaric in the upper left of Garden of Earthly Delights...now that is a cool pop culture/cultural reference, woudn't you think? :) Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 02:51, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Dammit, can't find any fly agarics in either this or the Paradise and Hell painting...grrr Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 13:29, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
Hi Cas. I have a nice hi-res "personal" copy of the Garden and can try to locate them. Am I looking for a mushroom that looks like the main fly agaric photo? I could also email you the left panel image (bearing in mind that the image source prohibits redistribution, which I will take to mean "other than to one person in an email" :). –Outriggr § 05:29, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it is a red capped mushroom with white spots. If you see one,let me know - I trust yer judgement (email is fine too) The source noting it is online and is ambiguous in its wording as it mentions Paradise and Hell at the same time...Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 05:56, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Mind keeping a careful watchlist eye on Stereolab? Merzbow hasn't edited in a while and while it doesn't get many edits, we of course want to keep the kids from mucking about with it too much and not cleaning up afterwards. I figure you'd be more able to update it effectively when new news pops up than I would be. WesleyDodds (talk) 06:51, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

I've submitted Britney Spears for peer review. I'd like to nominate the article for FAC after the review is over, however grueling the review may be. Any and all help is appreciated. Peer review open here. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 09:35, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
