Emmerdale is a British soap opera, set in the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, this realistic down-to-earth drama superbly chronicles the joys and the heartbreaks of a tightly-knit countryside community. The show airs on ITV and entered its twenty-ninth broadcasted year on 4th January 2000 with its 2632rd episode, with Kieran Roberts continuing his role as producer and Keith Richardson as executive producer. Emmerdale aired 187 episodes in 2000, with the typical week comprising three half-hour episodes on ITV, before being shifted to five episodes in the latter part of the year. Transmission was now broadcasted on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Paul Loughran decided to quit the role of Butch Dingle after six years, and was killed off in a dramatic bus accident in March 2000. These events led to the introduction of the milestone characters of Cain and Charity Dingle when they attended his funeral in the latter part of March 2000, and slowly became permanent fixtures in the village. Psycho Graham Clark finally came to a demise in February, after him and Kathy Glover were involved in a car accident, which led to the car plummenging from the edge of a cliff and Graham fell to his death. The characters of Laura Johnstone, Lyn Hutchinson, Ned Glover and Roy Glover also made their final appearances in this year. One of the most dominent exits from the year, excluding the award-winning exit of Butch, was the death of Sarah Sugden in November, which the public saw her die following her being involved in a barn fire. Lisa Riley also decided to quit the role of Mandy Dingle and was last seen in September after a tension-thrilling two-hander episode between her and Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt).

The year of 2000, also had introductions. Such as legendary characters of Shadrach Dingle, Edna Birch, Bob Hope, Rodney Blackstock and Chloe Atkinson making their first appearances. As well as the characters of Gloria Weaver, Carlos Diaz and Faith Dingle commencing their debuts. The year also saw the reappearance of Nellie Dingle who was now played by Maggie Tagney, and was last seen in 1995 played by Sandra Gough.

During 2000, Emmerdale firstly aired three half-hour episodes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, before the programme began transmitting five half-hour episodes a week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The episodes were transmitted on ITV. A weekly omnibus edition was also broadcasted. Kieran Roberts continued his role as producer and Keith Richardson as executive producer.

Lisa's fed up with the mess at the Dingles, and finds a letter from the health authority saying a health visitor is due that day. Viv refuses to serve Zoe, even though she was only going to settle the paper bill. Ashley calls at the pub and Diane tells him that Gavin's gone for good. Diane knows he loves her but warns him to keep his distance in the short term. Emily's selling off all the Christmas stock at a discount. Viv gives Terry a roasting for working for the Tates. Scott calls into the surgery to say hello to a grumpy Kelly. She hides her filing in a drawer. Zak moans to Butch and Emily about Lisa pandering to the DSS. Alan offers to buy back the pub, but Bernice doesn't seem keen. Marlon calls into the diner to see Kathy. He offers to cook a meal for her - she hopes it's because he wants his job back. Butch has taken the wheels off Alan's GK bus, and he's outraged. Butch has done it to save Emily's job. Andy and Robert are impressed when they see Ashley - they call him Prince Naz! He's not very proud of himself, but tries to cheer Kelly up, who's brooding at the cricket pavilion. Zak's busy watching the racing when Belle crawls out of the house. Lisa's angry with Butch, even though he had good intentions. The health visitor nearly runs Belle over when she arrives at the Dingles. Zak's not very sympathetic and tells her to clear off. Lisa's too late to see her. Paddy and Zoe have decided on a new vet - Adam Forrester. They're not happy with Kelly's performance. Seth welcomes Ashley to the Woolpack as the new 'Beast of Beckindale', he's hailed as a hero. Zoe realises that Ashley loves Bernice. Bernice turns down Alan's offer to buy the pub. Marlon and Kathy enjoy dinner and chat about old times. Zoe turns in for the night, leaving Chris to read. Kathy's disappointed that Marlon's moved on. The door of Home Farm goes, and it's Frankie.

Frankie confronts Zoe about her trip to Germany and incarceration. Chris orders her to leave but Zoe wants her to stay. Jack's been out looking after a sick ewe, and Sarah gets up to make him a cup of tea. Frankie goes to leave, but Zoe offers to let her stay for the night. Jack and Sarah get back to bed and cuddle each other warm. Frankie tells Zoe what she's been up to since we last saw her. Zoe's secretly thrilled. The next morning Kathy's off to Home Farm to see Joseph. Graham offers to come and is put out again when she tells him to get to work. Lisa tells Zak to look after Belle while she's out, and he counters by telling her that he's already had four children. He's unflustered about childrearing, but it's Lisa's first. Chris has bought Joseph a new pony, but he's scared to ride it - until Terry gives him a piggy-back ride. Chris feels sorry that he'll never be able to do that. Richie arranges to see Chris later - without Scott's knowledge. Sarah thinks her car's been stolen, and Richie offers to give her a lift to find out. Frankie's gone, leaving only a note saying 'thanks'. Sarah discovers Ashley is driving her car. Sarah discovers that Jack has sold her car without her knowledge. Terry tells Claudia about his secret son, Tom. He misses a family. Chris thanks Terry for his help with Joseph. Ollie's hanging about the haulage yard, because she's banned from the youth club. Sarah confronts Jack about selling her car. Diane's a bit hungover, but she's happy to work at the pub. She's thinking of selling her B & B to fund Bernice's takeover of the pub. Ollie flirts with Mike Blake, a new driver, but Sean interrupts them and almost beats him up. Mike's scared, but Ollie's excited at the trouble she caused. Richie calls at Home Farm and impresses Chris with his straight talk. He wants any deal to be just between him and Chris. Sarah and Jack argue - they're back to square one, and she really hurts him. She tells him their marriage is dead.

Relations are still frosty at the Sugdens, and Sarah hasn't washed Robert's school jumper. Chris is taking Joseph to school, and vows to Terry that as soon as he's 11, he'll be going to private school. Chris tells Zoe to stop daydreaming about Frankie. Kathy brings him his lunch. Zoe feels a bit left out. Sean and Angie wonder what to do with Ollie. Reggie comes into the diner to hassle Betty. Sarah's late and rude to Kathy. Diane tells Ashley to keep away from Bernice when she finds her bracelet in his pocket. Zoe promises to cheer him up later. Butch sees an advert for Wylie Farm in the Courier and shows Emily. Sarah's grumpy with Eric and tells him to stick his ketchup. She breaks down in the kitchen. Everyone fusses over Joseph after his first day, but Chris tries his best to exclude Zoe. Reggie persuades Betty to come out for a cup of tea with him. Sarah pours out her heart to Kathy about her marriage. Jack and the boys pop into the diner and make her feel guilty. Emily discovers that her dad's farm has been repossessed, and she's worried because she doesn't know where he is. Jack moans about Sarah to Terry in the pub. Sean asks Ashley to let Ollie back in the youth club. Zoe and Ashley commiserate about how unlucky in love they are. Bernice wonders if there's anything wrong with Ashley, but he's too scared of Diane. Seth and Betty have a cosy chat on the sofa. Zoe's determined to sort her life out.

Ollie condescends to let Ashley know she'll be coming back to the youth club. Chris tells Zoe he's decided to got back to work. He lectures her about mooning over Frankie, and tells her to go out and get what she wants in life. Jack asks Sarah how long she'll keep up the silent treatment, but she won't budge. He storms out. Scott warns Kelly that Lyn will be around in the next few days, but she claims she doesn't care. Emily's frantic with worry about her missing father. Zak gets in trouble for fixing an engine in the front room, so he blames it on Butch. Chris tears a strip off Sean for being slack in Chris's absence. Diane almost tells Bernice that Ashley loves her. Zoe asks Pete about Frankie's whereabouts - she's working in a warehouse in Manchester. Ashley comes into The Woolpack determined to profess his love, but is shocked at Bernice's keenness to talk to him. Ashley's confused when Bernice says yes - he's destroyed when he realises she was agreeing to help with a church sale!!! He thought she was offering to use her homemade jams in a different capacity. He realises it's the wrong time to declare his love. Kelly feels terrible when Paddy shows her an abandoned puppy. He's excited when Mandy calls to tell him she's coming home. Kathy feels uncomfortable at a dinner party with Graham in Mill Cottage. Lisa and Zak bicker about Belle in the pub. Emily's maudlin about her father. Graham suggests that there's nothing to keep Kathy in the village any more, but she feels her roots are here. Jack promises a worried Andy he'll try and sort things out with Sarah.
