With Devils Amongst Us All is the third studio album by American metalcore band Walls of Jericho, released on August 22, 2006, by Trustkill Records. Recorded at Spider Studios in Cleveland with producer Ben Schiegel, it was the first album the band recorded with an outside producer, as well as their first with drummer Dustin Schoenhofer. Blending together elements of metalcore, thrash metal and hardcore (punk?), the album saw the band expand be

With Devils Amongst Us All received generally positive reviews from critics.

The album sold 2,800 copies in its first week to debut at number 24 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums Chart. To promote the album, Walls of Jericho filmed a music video for "A Trigger Full of Promises". The song was also included in MTV Headbanger's Ball compilation, MTV2 Headbanger's Ball: The Revenge, released through Roadrunner Records. The band also participated in the Ozzfest tour, the Trustkill Takeover Tour, and the Family Values Tour 2006.

Background and recording[edit]

After touring in support of their previous album All Hail the Dead (2004), Walls of Jericho began writing new material in December 2005, and spent four or five months writing With Devils Amongst Us All.[3] Vocalist Candace Kucsulain noted that in contrast to All Hail the Dead, which was written and recorded within four months following their 2003 reformation, the band had more time to write material and had gathered ideas for the album for more than two years, in additon to its members having a better understanding of each other.[3][4] She also cited the addition of drummer Dustin Schoenhofer, who joined Walls of Jericho in November 2004,[5] as an influence on the band's new songs with his playing style.[3] Aware that they would be subject to more scrutiny following their last album, the band spent more time arranging their material—often arduousy—which carried over into recording.[6] "There were times when Chris [Rawson], our guitar player, was like: 'Holy shit! This doesn't work. This is no good. I don't know what to do! And then we worked on some things, changed little things here and there, but it was a lot of pressure", Kucsulain said.[7] According to guitarist Mike Hasty, they structured their songs with the aim of "[shifting] things around" when they got into the studio, though in the end "not that much actually got changed."[8]

At the start of March 2006, they travelled to Spider Studios in Cleveland, Ohio to record the album with producer and former Switched frontman Ben Schiegel.[4][9] Recording lasted six weeks.[8] Having previously recorded their albums through Hasty, the band decided to seek an outside producer to stop them from "[writing] the same thing over and over again" and help establish their own sound;[10] they were connected to Schiegel through their shared manager, Paul Bassman.[11] Kucsulain said that Walls of Jericho did not want Schiegel to "be the kind of [producer] who would come in and try to take control over everything or try to write things or change our sound", and as such his input was limited to specifically requested areas, or whenever he "saw something that needed to be changed".[12] She nevertheless felt that he helped develop the dynamics and structures of their songs,[13] which "definitely helped" on certain songs such as "No Saving Me".[12] In early April 2006, Hasty and Schoenhofer travelled to New Jersey to begin mixing the album at Trax East with Eric Rachel whilst Rawson and Kucsulain "finished up some vocal stuff".[14] It was completed on April 24, 2006.[15]

Composition and lyrics[edit]

With Devils Amongst Us All has been described as metalcore,(popmatters)(metalde)(rr press)(punk planet), thrash metal.(popmatters)(ox fanzine)(metalde), and hardcore punk.(dis) (just hardcore???) It showcases an fast, heavy and aggressive sound(popmatters) featuring precise drumming,(dis) hardcore breakdowns,(DIS) and an (greater?) emphasis on melodic qualities,(popmatters) seen most prominently in "The Haunted" and "No Saving Me",(lautde and metalde) and on hooks/choruses (interchangeable with hooks or no?) The intensity and speed of several tracks drew frequent comparisons to Slayer.(punk planet, popmatters (deadwalkagain) and metalde, metal hammer (tryfailrepeat) ) Candace Kucsulain's vocals range from screams growls and melodic singing.

The album overall has a more positive lyrical outlook than All Hail the Dead, (lyrics more positive???)

The album's lyrics are again based on personal things, though it bears a more positive outlook.

address various social issues.[10] Whilst still based on personal things more positive (find citiations) and direct than on the band's previous albums.[16]

Other themes addressed include

learning from past mistakes ("Try.Fail.Repeat")(metal edge 07)

"A Trigger Full of Promises" is about finding the person you love, and conquering what stops you from being with that person.[16] According to Decibel, "I Know Hollywood and You Ain’t It" showcases crust-punk interpreted "as a dance-y, layered stomp-fest".[17] "And Hope To Die" is about the suicides of people who were friends with Walls of Jericho.[16] "The Haunted" begins with "eerie, melancholic chanting" and features a melodic chorus,(popmatters, metalde) whilst lyrically adressing the subject of rape and the need for greater awareness of it.[10][18] Kucsulain found the song "weird" due to its catchiness, but believed that "if you want people to listen to the message, you have to sugarcoat the package".[10] "No Saving Me" is a rock ballad about feeling "totally alienated from the real world" whilst the band was on tour,[3] and is musically similar (A COMBINATION? Metal rage) to their previous songs "To Be Contined..." from All Hail the Dead (2004) and "Angel" from The Bound Feed the Gagged (1999).(CITENEED) (fourteeng?) It was the first song on the album the band completed music for,[8] but the last to have its vocals recorded.[16] "Welcome Home" is about domestic violence.(popmatters)

According to Kucsulain, the album's title "represents evil in everyday life".[3]

On March 29, 2006, Headbangers ball compilation

filmed their first music video,

On May 28, 2007, the band filmed a music video for "A Trigger Full of Promises", which Kucsulain described as the band's "first real video",[11] inside an old farmhouse in Pennyslvania. Directed by Dale Restigini and scripted by Dustin Schoenhofer, the video reflects the song's lyrics.

[16]

The initial idea was to combine a 'Romeo and Juliet' storyline with METALLICA's 'Unforgiven' video." The song is about the idea of love and the video portrays lovers who are separated by a prison wall, who give up their health, well-being and ultimately their lives, to reach one another. Critical reception[edit]

With Devils Amongst Us All received generally positive reviews from critics. Alternative Press gave the album a perfect score, stating that it showed Walls of Jericho had reached "the height of their powers [...], and are completely worthy of the world’s attention." Raziq Rauf of Drowned in Sound r

Ox-Fanzine's Tobias Ernst found it "more well-rounded and the consistently high level" than All Hail the Dead.

Chay Lawrence of Punk Planet was less enthusiastic, finding its songwriting formularic but praising its production. Though acknowleding that it was "not groundbreaking music", Adrien Begrand of PopMatters felt that the overall "convincing, sincere approach" of the album made it "likeable enough to warrant an enthusiastic recommendation over the usual crop of cookie-cutter [metal] bands".

Ingo of Metal.de , but felt that Kucsulain's vocals would appeal more to metalcore fans than thrash metal fans.??

The inclusion of "No Saving Me" suprised and divided many reviewers.[7] Kerrang! called the song the album's "only real dissapointment", feeling that it was "superfluous" when considering the "impressive carnage surrounding it". Ingo of Metal.de reccommended listeners to skip the track as it did not fit in with the rest of the album. Mike Kemp of Rock Sound considered the song's inclusion "so far out of character that it sticks out like a penguin in the Sahara." Rauf (DIS) was more favorable, stating that it helped break up Kucsulain's "relentless and slightly tiresome [vocal] cacophony" and suggested that it may "be a taster of much more melodic things to come." Begrand (PM) praised Kucsulain's range on the song's as well as its genuinity, and implored the band to "explore this territory more in the future, and not let this song be just a one-off". In a 2007 interview with AllSchools, Kucsulain stated that Walls of Jericho were not "afraid of the controversy ["No Saving Me"] might cause" and told reviewers who did not understand the song to listen to listen to the band's previous albums, "Because every single record we have done I have once sang."[7]

History[edit]

Formation and 8 Convulsions (1993–1995)[edit]

Crisis was formed in New York City by guitarist Afzaal Nasiruddeen.

Karyn Crisis auditioned. the vocal style came there and then/

The band's original bassist protested the additon of Karyn to Crisis and quit the band because he did not want to play with a woman.[1] "He was just a male chauvinist pig. He was a typical guy. He wanted to be in a rock 'n' roll band with, you know, sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll," Nasiruddeen later said.[1]

In December 2001, Crisis announced that they had recruited drummer Christopher J. Olivas and changed their name to Skullsick Nation.[2] Hobson said that the name change was due to Crisis having "gone through so many changes over the last four years since The Hollowing that it feels like a completely new band".[3] Similarly, Karyn Crisis said that the band had been demoing and experimenting with new sounds that "did not sound like Crisis".[4] The band's first show under the moniker took place at the Troubador in Hollywood on January 4, 2002.[2]

CMJ described the Dead to the World demo as sounding "more like a rock n roll band with stoner riffing" (sept 23 2002)

Like Sheep Led to Slaughter and indefinite hiatus (2003–2006)[edit]

Crisis offfically returned in October 2002.

https://web.archive.org/web/20030618161121/http://www.crisissite.com:80/news.htmIn December 2002, Crisis recruited ex-Today is the Day drummer Marshall Killpatric,[5] and in March announced plans for a new album.[6] Less than a month later, however, Killpatric stopped attending the band for unclear reasons and they were forced to seek a replacement.[7] By May 2003, they had recruited Josh Florian.

Crisis drummer Josh Florian bust his appendix before the Kittie/Otep/Crisis Metal Movement Tour,

On September 25, 2004, Florian "bust his appendix", preventing him from going on tour.[9] Tino LoSicco quickly filled in for initial dates,[9] though Fred Waring III returned to play most of the dates of the Metal Movement Tour whilst Crisis searched for a new drummer.[10] By January 2005,(sharpe young 2005) they had recruited drummer Ryan Ball, though the band dismissed him after only three rehearsals in February 2005.[11] Crisis said that Bird was let go from the band due to immigration issues and "the chaos of his personality".[11] Two weeks after his departure Bird was arrested for armed robbery, prompting Crisis to release a statement on the matter whilst denying that he was a permanent member.[11] Justin Arman was subsequenly recruited as their new drummer, initially for touring purposes. He became an official member in April 2005.[12]

In September 2005, longtime bassist Gia Chuan Wang left Crisis due to family committments; he was replaced by Nick Weitzel for the band's tour with Exodus as they sought a permanent replacement.[13]

On May 2, 2006, Crisis announced they were going on an indefinite hiatus to allow its members to focus on their personal lives as well as other musical interests. The band thanked , and expressed interest in working with The End on another album if the band considered releasing another album.[14]

On October 20, 2023, 8 Convulsions was remastered and reissued on CD and vinyl by Svart Records.[15]

Musical style and influences[edit]

GET MATERIAL FROM GERMAN WIKI ARTICLE

The End Records described the band as "Experimental metalcore". (bands page)

According to Eduardo Rivadavia of AllMusic, the band fills the gap between Faith No More, Killing Joke and Slayer. Karyn Crisis' vocals range from melodic clean vocals to aggressive, guttural vocals. Canadian journalist Martin Popoff described the album Deathshead Extermination as a mixture of thrash and death metal, with Swedish grindcore. Lyrically, the songs mostly deal with dark themes, such as blood, hatred, depression and self-hatred. Robert Müller of Metal Hammer compared Karyn Crisis' vocals on the album to Lydia Lunch and Babes in Toyland. On The Hollowing, according to Popoff, the influences from sludge increased, so that the band could be compared to newer works by Voivod. Growling is used as a vocal technique in half of the songs . The lyrics are again negative.  The November 1997 issue of Metal Hammer described the album as a mixture of " industrial , death metal and noise avant-garde " .  Manuela Liefländer, in his review of the album Like Sheep Led to Slaughter, classified the band as hardcore punk . He described the lyrics as apocalyptic , while the vocals were experimental, reminiscent of dark metal in their variety .

Guitarist Afzaal Nasiruddeen cited New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands as well as post-industrial bands such as Einstürzende Neubauten as influences. He and the rest of the band tried to implement the avant-garde elements of this band in particular.[16]

Never Again is the third extended play by Canadian heavy metal band Kittie, released exclusively on digital storefronts on February 7, 2006, through Rock Ridge Music. The EP contains four demos of "Never Again", "This Too Shall Pass", "Breathe", and "Everything That Could Have Been", the latter an iTunes exclusive track. All four songs were later re-recorded for Kittie's fourth album Funeral For Yesterday (2007). The EP was recorded by vocalist/guitarist Morgan Lander and drummer Mercedes Lander at Mole Studios in Kittie's hometown of London, Ontario. After guitarist Tara McLeod and bassist Trish Doan joined the band in August 2005, they had McLeod add some guitar leads to its songs.

Never Again was praised by critics. Kittie supported on the Never Again Tour across America for two months, allowing the band to develop their songs along the way before recording them in the summer of 2006.

Music, writing and recording[edit]

(westword considered it) "qualifies as its most commercial recording thus far". (the band's most accessible release yet.)

The EP was written in the aftermath of their departure from Artemis Records in March 2005.

At the end of April 2005, they entered Mole Studios in their hometown of London, Ontario to record five demo tracks.[1][2] Kittie self-produced the recordings themselves, with Mole Studios owner Ryner providing engineering support.(CITENEED) After recruiting guitarist Tara McLeod and bassist Trish Doan in August 2005, Morgan and Mercedes had McLeod add some guitar leads to the EP's songs.[3]

Release and promotion[edit]

On December 20, 2005, Kittie announced that they would be releasing the Never Again EP in February 7, 2006, exclusively on digital storefronts.[4] Morgan said that the band's decision to forgo releasing the EP on physical media was more down to convenience and time, as they wanted their fanbase to know that the band were "still writing, still kicking ass and not on Artemis".[5]

like for weeks leading up to its release the band put out samples on their myspace page or somthing in january.

Retailing for $3.96, it reached the top 20 of the iTunes Top 50 chart, and remained on the chart for three weeks. (lansig st jrnal) The EP was streamed in its entirety on AOL Music's listening party page for a week after its release.[6]

[7]

The day after its release, the EP debuted at number 20 on the iTunes Top Rock Downloads Chart.[8]

On February 4, 2006, Kittie played at WRIF's Pre-Superbowl Bash at TNT's in Detroit, Michigan.[9] From March 31 to June 17, 2006, the band embarked on its first tour in over a year, the Never Again tour, across the United States.[10][11] Across its dates, the band were supported by The Agony Scene, Bloodlined Calligraphy, Burning Armada, Byzantine, Calico System, Dead to Fall, Donnybrook, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Five Bolt Main, Jacknife, Job for a Cowboy, Naos Project, On Broken Wings, Seemless, Twelve Tribes and The Warriors.[11][12] The band played all four of the EP's songs on the tour, alongside some newer tracks such as "Summer Dies" and

The band finished writing and arranging their songs after the tour,[13] before entering the studio to record Funeral for Yesterday with producer Jack Ponti in July 2006.[14]

Critical reception[edit]

Never Again received generally positive reviews from critics. Andrew Parks of Decibel gave the EP an 8 out of 10, saying it "props 2006 as a promising year for the quartet".[15][16] Westword praised it as "a hard, heavy and hooky combination of singing and caterwauling".[17]
