St. Bernard's Academy is a private, Roman Catholic school in Eureka, California. It is a 7-12 school. Located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santa Rosa in California, and it is run independently by St. Bernard's Academy, Inc.

Background[edit]

St. Bernard's was established in 1912 by the Sisters of St. Joseph, which was called Nazareth Academy at that time. St. Bernard’s Elementary was built in 1949 at 222 Dollison Street, then later the Sisters opened St. Bernard's High school in 1954. In 1963 a new elementary school was opened at 115 Henderson Street while the old elementary school at 222 Dollison Street was used for High School students. In 1964 the Sisters released ownership of the schools to the Diocese of Santa Rosa. In July 1999, the elementary and high schools merged together to become St. Bernard's Catholic School. In September 2000, the Bishop of the Diocese of Santa Rosa permitted independence to the school. In 2003, the school started to collaborate with a Korean academy to dorm international students from Korea. After a period of time, the school began to dorm other international students from other places oversea as well. St. Bernard's currently offers a preschool, junior and senior high.

Academics[edit]

Advanced Placement Courses

St. Bernard's Academy offers 13 advanced placement classes: Art, European History, U.S. History, Environmental science, Spanish, English Language, English Literature, Macro Economics, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, Physics 1, Computer Programming, and Biology. St. Bernard's Academy includes honors programs in Science, Math, English, and History. Elective courses are provided in performing and fine arts, technology, Spanish, Latin and physical education.

Junior High

Junior High students are required to complete courses in mathematics, English, science, religion, social sciences, physical education, art and music in order to promote from the St. Bernard’s Junior High Program. They are required to take seven courses. Elective courses are provided such as foreign language, drama and art.

To participate in extracurricular activities in Junior High, students must have grades no lower than C.[2]

High School

High school students have an opportunity to participate in field trips and project periods with real-life learning experiences. Students graduate with the knowledge and ability to fully contribute as informed citizens of society. St. Bernard’s High School has a small school environment with a teacher to student ratio of 14:1.

In order to graduate high school, all students are required to earn 240 credits in mathematics, foreign language, English, science, religion, social sciences, physical education, visual and proforimg arts, computer and technology. Students are able to earn advanced credits when enrolled in honors and advanced placement courses.[3]

Students are eligible to earn up to 2.5 units for a session of participation on a sports team. Maximum of 10 units can be earned.

St. Bernard’s academy has partnered up with College of Redwoods to provide college courses for current St. Bernard’s students on St. Bernard’s campus.

Awards[edit]

  • 2019 Golden Can Award winner: Senator Mike McGuire announced the winner of Humboldt Holiday Food Drive is St. Bernard's. The school brought in 2,930 lbs of food for hungry families in Humboldt County. According to Senator Mike McGuire, "When the St. Bernard's team pulled up with a truck and trailer and a van full of food, we knew we had a winner!"[5]
