AMAUZARI TOWN

Amauzari is a town in Isiala Mbano local government area of Imo State, Nigeria. The town comprises of villages namely Umuechem, Okwelle, Anuzo, Umuchukwu, Umuagwu, Umumpele, Umueze Duru, Umueze Amankwo, Umueze Njokuocha, Umunumo and Okwosu. Formerly Ekwe and Umudim were villages in Amauzari until the two were carved out from the community to form an autonomous community known as Ekwedim.

Amauzari shares borders with these communities: Umunkwo, Agbaje, Amaigbo, Amandugba, Ogwa and Atta (on the border of Ekwedim/Umudim).

ENTERTAINMENTS

Despite the geographical location of the town, Amauzari still serves as the entertainment and trade hub of the surrounding communities. During the festive periods, people from other communities come to the town for recreational and business activities. There are hotels that serve as lodging accommodations in the town. The annual community football matches that takes place every Christmas is one of the events that pull the highest crowd in the town. The football tournament is strictly for indigenes of the town, who represent different branches where they reside. The community masquerade (okorosha and owu) serve as entertainments on every Christmas, while the village cultural day holds on every 26th December.

THE MARKET SQUARE

The popular market in the town is called Afor Amauzari located at the centre of the town. It is a daily market, where people do buy and selling, but on every eight days, specifically on Afor market day, people from other parts of the state and beyond come there to sell and buy things in the bigger scale. The market square has edifice of upstairs constructed by the sons and daughters of the town. Adjacent to the market square lies a gigantic building that serves as the town complex.

TRADE

Farming is one of the thriving and common means of livelihood in the community. Palm-oil production also adds to the economy of the community, which is produced in local and mechanised ways. Other trades that flourish in the community are, selling of farm produce (like fruits, yam, cassava, firewoods, vegetables, etc), and rearing of livestock.

SCHOOLS

Amauzari is a community known for her educational backgrounds. Evidently, there are schools ranging from primary to secondary schools scattered across the town, both private and public ownerships. The Central School Amauzari is one of the renowned primary schools in the community and the first school in the entire community. There are notable and renowned people of class that passed through the Central School Amauzari. The likes of the Rt. Rev. Prof. Augustine O. Iwuagwu, (the Anglican Bishop Emeritus of old Aba Diocese, Abia state) and Justice Ononuju, (a former judge of the Nigeria High Court) were former pupils of the school.

In the post primary school level, the Comprehensive Secondary School Amauzari (now in Ekwedim) is the first secondary school in the community, with big structures, large compound and other facilities ideal for modern learning.

The community library located at the former residence of Late Sir Davidson Anyimukwu, exactly at the popular "Otokoro-ishi-afor", before the market square from Amauzari-Umunkwo road helps the students in the community to carry out researches and other academic exercises.

HOSPITALS

The Aladimma hospital in the community serves as the community health centre, with benefiting structures and facilities that serve certain level of standard

RELIGION

Amauzari is predominantly a Christian town with little invincible traditional believers and other worshippers in the town. There are different churches in the town, which help in shaping the moral values of the people in the community. The town frowns and openly condemns anything fetish, immorality, robbery and inglorious acts.

The ST John's Anglican is the first church in the community, with a gigantic structure led in 1954. The architectural design and the edifice of the church building still serves the taste of time. Other churches in the town are ST Theresa Catholic Church, The Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah Witness, Salvation Army Church and Pentecostal churches scattered across the town.

NOTABLE PEOPLE FROM THE TOWN

Eze George Ibezim, the Obizuo 1 of Amauzari is the traditional ruler of the community.

Dr Kenneth Chibuzo Nwosu, the first medical doctor in the community; a renowned paediatrician and philanthropist based in the UK.

Late Dr Azuoma, the first PhD holder in the community.

Late Pa. Elijah Azonobi Nkemakolam, one of the first missionaries and founding members of St John's Anglican church, Amauzari.

Late Pa. Metumaraibe Emmanuel Nkemakolam, the first person in the community that owned and lived in an upstairs' building.

Late Mrs. Ugadiya Sam, the first car owner in the community and a women leader.

Late Barrister Eregbu, the first legal practitioner from the community.

Late Sir Benson O. Asinugo, a renowned educationist and community leader.

Late Professor Maxwell Nnamdi Asika, the first professor in the community and a university Don.

Dr Theo Osuala, a USA based medical practitioner and the Vice President General of the community.

Chief Isaac Iwuoha, a retired Police Commissioner and former President General of the community. He is the chairman of Lobito Hotels and Lobito motors Abuja.
