Blake Rose is an Australian singer-songwriter and record producer.

He cited The 1975, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Passenger and Jack Garratt as his musical inspirations and influences.[2][3]

Biography

[edit]

A native of Perth, Blake Rose has been exposed to music since a young age, and studied cello for four years in primary school.[1] He realized he wanted to do music while on a three-month camping trip around Australia with his parents in 2012,[4] when he was 14, during which he began to write his own songs.[5] Rose went on to experiment with music production through GarageBand and Pro Tools,[5] then got accepted into a two-week school program in Sri Lanka.[1][5] To go on the trip, he raised money by performing on the streets of Fremantle and Perth,[6] and busking later became his part-time job.[1]

While Rose was attending the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, he was asked to write a song for a DJ's track;[3] he subsequently contacted other DJs, until he met the Sydney-based duo Bad Decisions, with whom he toured around the world for a while, until they landed in Los Angeles.[3] Rose started travelling back and forth to the city,[1] raising money in Australia through busking, pub gigs and selling CDs door to door to fund the trip.[3] During one of his stays in LA in 2017, he signed a publishing deal with Kobalt Music Group.[3][4][7]

Career

[edit]

On November 2, 2018, he released his first single, "Hotel Room",[1] written with Joel Adams and Justin Gammella,[8] which amassed a million streams during the first months of its release.[9] It was followed, in February 2019, by his second solo "Lost", whose sound was linked to that of Cameron Dallas, Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes.[10][11] After the success of "Lost", which reached almost 30 million streams on Spotify alone by May 2020, Rose signed a business deal with Paradigm and CODA.[7]

In April 2019, Rose published another single, "Best of Me", a song inspired by a close friend who had been battling with drug addiction.[1][12] It was followed in 2020 by "Gone", "Rest Of Us",[13] and "Ordinary People".[9] He returned to the music scene on August 6, 2021, with the single "Casanova", a preview of his first extended play A World Gone By,[14][15] released on October 8 after another extracted single, "Movie".[16][17] At that date, his discography had over 150 million combined global streams.[14] He accompanied singer-songwriter Noah Kahan in his 38-city tour I Was/I Am Tour from October 14 to December 19, 2021,[14] with Road Trip Playlists's Thomas Darro and Keven Carlson naming him "one of music's biggest rising stars"[18] and "an artist to watch".[19]

On March 4, 2022, he released the single "Confidence".[20] He then toured with Ashe from April 4,[21] where Rose performed a new song, "Demon".[22] A new single titled "Dizzy" was released in October, previewing his new extended play You'll Get It When You're Older, due for February 24, 2023, which centers around drug addiction.[23] He then toured North America with girl in red[23] and Baby's All Right, and opened for Dean Lewis in Australia and New Zealand from November 3 to December 3, 2022.[24]

He was nominated for Best New Artist at the Rolling Stone Australia Awards 2023.[25]
