Pete Williams was born on the 5th of February 1960 at Hallam hospital West Bromwich in the Blackcountry. After attending Rowley Hall Primary school and then Rowley Regis Grammar School, Pete worked as an apprentice Patternmaker and Foundryman by day, and at night and weekends played Bass guitar and sang in various bands around the west midlands Social and working mens clubs. In 1977 Pete, along with schoolfriend, Kevin Archer formed The Negatives, a shortlived but powerful Punk band. After replying to a Birmingham Mail small ad,'Manager looking for New wave bands' The Negatives invited Pete Rowland to their rehearsal room above The Shoulder of Mutton Pub in Blackheath to hear them play, he bought along his younger brother Kevin Rowland who at the time was vocalist with Birmingham punk group The Killjoys. Kevin R was impressed by Kevin A and invited him to join The Killjoys. Pete immediately formed the Funk outfit 'Car Bored' with a floating line up of musicians and performed a handful of memorable shows using the 'automatic writing' of Coal Woodhouse (vocals) Shortly after leaving The Negatives, The Killjoys split up, Pete was contacted by Kevin Archer and was asked to join himself and Kevin Rowland in forming a Band taking in the main part the musical influences of 1960's British and American Soul. Pete Saunders(keys) was also present at this stage.
