One of the most renowned artists from Phillip II's court was Sofonisba Anguissola, who enjoyed widespread fame for her unusual role as a woman artist and her remarkable talent. She was invited in 1559 to the court of Madrid and was then chosen to become one of Infanta Isabella's (1566–1633) attendants. Anguissola also became a lady-in-waiting and court painter for the queen, Elizabeth de Valois. During her time as a court painter, Anguissola painted many official portraits of the royal family, a sharp bifurcation from her previous personal portraits.

Phillip II appointed Sofonisba Anguissola, a renowned Italian female artist, to be a lady-in-waiting and court painter for his queen. Under Anguissola's tutelage, Elisabeth improved her amateur painting skills even further. Anguissola also influenced the artistic works of Isabella Clara Eugenia and Caterina Michaela during her time at the court.

Anguissola's close working relationship with Alonso Sanchez Coello meant this painting was falsely attributed to him or Juan Pantoja de la Cruz, however only recently has this painting been recognized to have been Anguissola's work.
