User:Cmh/List of page titles with multiple capitalizations

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It is very confusing when there are two pages that are on different topics, but share the same title except for capitalization. I have proposed that we change the Wikipedia naming conventions to limit this.

This list of page titles with multiple capitalizations attempts to quantify the size of the issue. Each line in this list has links to pages that have the same title (capitalization aside). Pages that are simply redirects are NOT included in this list, so this is a list of cases where there are ACTUALLY two or more content pages with the same title.

Not all entries are a problem

[edit]

Not all of these cases are a problem. For example, it has been asserted in discussion that WASP and Wasp are not ambiguous as one is an acronym which is naturally spelled in all uppercase, while the other is not.

However, the briefest of glances shows problem pages.

These articles are confusingly named and hard to find. All of these should be disambiguated according to the proposal.

At the least, this list should likely turn into a work list of pages that should be checked for gross error in naming, no matter what happens to my proposal. For now, please don't edit the list, but should this turn into a project that restriction will go away.

Methodology

[edit]

Note that the list of pages was obtained from the Wikimedia Dump Site (May 2, 2006 dump) and redirects were checked over the space of 3-4 days. So this is not a static snapshot which explains the redlinks in the list and possible creation of redirects at some of these pages.

Yes, I am aware that my script broke the UTF-8 extended characters. This can be fixed if required, but is not required to make the point I'm trying to make here.
