Michael Woodcock (American artist)

Michael Woodcock is an American artist who works in painting, drawing, and printmaking.

Woodcock, who was born October 25, 1951, New Milford, CT and lived in Bridgewater, CT on Gloca Mora Farm until 1957, holds an MFA in Drawing and Painting from Claremont Graduate University.[1] He taught as Professor of Art and Creative Studies at Pitzer College[2] in Claremont, California, and as Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Art at the Claremont Graduate University[3] for fifteen years.

Woodcock has exhibited his paintings at the Pacific Northwest College of Art,[4] the University of La Verne, [5] the Claremont Graduate University,[6] Cypress College,[7] Huntington Beach Art Center,[8] California Polytechnic State University, Pomona,[9] Scripps College Williamson Gallery,[10] the Riverside Art Museum,[11] the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery,[12] the Claremont Museum of Art,[13] Kohn Turner Gallery, Koplin del Rio,[14] John Thomas Gallery, George Cuttress Gallery, and Andi Campognone Projects.[15]


Themes

Woodcock’s paintings involve conceptual gambits based on language and appropriated images that are familiar, or even iconic, which challenge notions of authenticity and ownership.[16]


Awards

Woodcock’s limited edition, fine art letter-press book, Fourteen Ninety Two or Three,[17] a collaborative effort with writer Barry Sanders,[18] and book designer Bonnie Thompson Norman of The Windowpane Press[19] was included in the Western Book Exhibition, Rounce and Coffin Club at Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA and toured across the United States to various college and university galleries. Fourteen Ninety Two or Three received honorable mention in the Carl Hertzog Award for Excellence in Book Design.[20]
