Pennsylvania Six-5000 is an all-male a cappella singing group at the University of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania Six-5000 was originally foundedas the Penn Collegians by twelve singers in 1894. The group found early success performing at galas and balls including a “Welcoming the 20th Century Bash” in 1900. As years went on, traditions grew stronger, but some of the original comedy and musicianship in the group began to fade until 1933, when Glenn Miller turned them around. Later in Miller's musical career, when he penned the big-band swing hit “Pennsylvania Six-5000,” the then-current men of the Penn Collegians decided to change the name of the group in his honor.
The group works to keep its membership diverse with the stated intent of keeping a fresh perspective. Auditions are held every fall to accept new members. About 100 men audition each year for two to five openings.[1] Penn Six performs at a wide variety of events, from Bar Mitzvahs to alumni receptions, middle schools to college crowds.
They consistently sell out their biannual concerts,[citation needed] including their most recent show at WXPN’s World Cafe Live in Philadelphia.[citation needed]
