Elk Mountain is a mountain in the Medicine Bow Range in the U.S. state of Wyoming. It is the most northernly of the peaks in the Medicine Bow Range. The Laramie Plains spread to the north and east of the peak, and the Red Desert is located to the west. It is an imposing landmark in southern Wyoming with a clear prominence of 3,296 feet (1,005 m) and separated from the other high peaks in the range by 21 miles (34 km). A number of important trails cross Wyoming to the north of the peak, including the Cherokee and Overland wagon trails, the Overland Route of the Union Pacific Railroad, as well as the Lincoln Highway and Interstate 80.
