Virgil Mihaiu (born June 28, 1951 in Cluj) is a Romanian writer, jazz critic, diplomat, jazz aesthetics professor, polyglot, cultural promoter, and performer. Between 2006-2012, he was co-founder and the first director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Lisbon, as well as minister counsellor at Romania's Embassy in Portugal.

Biography[edit]

Virgil Mihaiu graduated from the Faculty of Letters, University of Cluj-Napoca in 1974. Main objects of study: English & German; secondary objects of study: Spanish & Portuguese. Between 1971 and 1983, Virgil Mihaiu was a member of the editorial staff of the Echinox[1] cultural magazine and from 1981 became member of the Writers' Union of Romania.[2] Between 1983 and 1993 he was included in the editorial staff of Jazz Forum, the International Jazz Federation's magazine,[3] published in Warsaw and since 1990 he has been a member of the editorial staff of Steaua, cultural monthly of the Writers’ Union.
Since 1992, Virgil Mihaiu is Assistant Professor at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj, honorary member of the United States' Jazz Journalists Association (JJA)[4] and member of the Romanian PEN Club.[5] Since 1997, he has been a co-founder and Professor of Jazz Aesthetics of the Jazz Department at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj.[6] In 1998 the Czech-Romanian Cultural Association nominated him as an honorary member. Since 1999, Virgil Mihaiu has been a member of the Down Beat Jazz Critics Poll[7] and member of the international editorial college of Down Beat,[8] Chicago international jazz magazine. In 2002 he received the Ph.D. title with a monograph research on F. Scott Fitzgerald.[9] In 2004, Virgil Mihaiu became member of the European Jazz Prize Jury (Hans Koller Prize)[10] in Vienna and member of the editorial council of the Tribuna[11] cultural magazine (Cluj-Napoca, Romania). Between 2006-2012 he exercised the functions of the first director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Lisbon[12] and minister counsellor with Romania's Embassy in Portugal[13]

Contributions, lecturing, congresses, grants[edit]

Virgil Mihaiu has published countless poems, essays, literary, musical and choreography criticism, and translations (from English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian, Swedish, and Italian) in Romania’s major cultural magazines. He has made contributions to cultural publications in Portugal, Poland, Great Britain, Germany,[14] Latvia,[15] Switzerland, Russia,[16] Croatia,[17] USA,[18] France, Brazil, Serbia, Austria, Italy, Norway,[19] Spain,[20] Rep. Moldova,[21] Hungary, Costa Rica, Montenegro,[22] Turkey and Canada.

Mihaiu has delivered Jazzology at various universities and institutes, and participated as a guest in congresses and festivals (Sweden, Portugal, Romania, Croatia, Germany, England, Austria, Spain, Lithuania, Switzerland, Serbia, Scotland, USA,[23] France, Italy, Montenegro, Rep. Moldova, Hungary, Greece, Slovakia, Ireland, Russia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Belgium). Between 2000 and 2005 he participated at the F. Scott Fitzgerald World Conferences held in Nice, France; Vevey, Switzerland; and New York, US, and he made several lectures, recitals & documentation tours through universities and cultural institutions of the United States (New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, San Francisco, Stanford, Boston, Chicago, New Jersey, and Berkeley).

Co-founder of Jazzographics (after 1993), a loose-knit jazz-poetry outfit displaying various stage combinations of the following artists:

Jazz-poetry shows together with Portuguese piano-improviser João Paulo Esteves da Silva, 2008, and the group Trigon, 2008.

Since 1980 he is the producer of the regular Eseu Jazz broadcast on Radio Cluj and CD Radio Napoca . After 1994: producer of the regular Jazzorelief TV broadcast and of various cultural programmes on Romania’s Public Television channels (TVR1, TVR2, TVR Cultural, TVR International, TVR3).
