James is a typical 15-year-old living in a small town in Oregon where he leads an idyllic life with his family, his best friend (Marc McClure) and girlfriend (Melissa Sue Anderson). After his father unexpectedly moves the family to Boston in the middle of the school year, James quickly becomes dissatisfied with his new life in the big city and embarks on a journey to return to his girlfriend in Oregon. On the way, he learns his girlfriend has become involved with another boy (Vincent Van Patten), prompting him to instead decide to make his way to Canada to begin a new life. Along the way, James meets a fellow hitch-hiker (Kate Jackson) who becomes a surrogate "big sister" and eventually convinces him to return to his family in Boston where he soon begins to appreciate the prospects of a whole new world that is open to him.
