The Bridge (Danish: Broen Danish pronunciation: [bʁoːn]; Swedish: Bron Swedish pronunciation: [bruːn]) is a Nordic noir crime television series created and written by Hans Rosenfeldt. A joint creative and financed production between Sweden's Sveriges Television and Denmark's Danmarks Radio, the first series was broadcast on the Swedish SVT1 and Danish DR1 during the autumn of 2011, and on the United Kingdom's BBC Four the following spring.[1] A total of 38 episodes aired over four seasons.

The first and second series joint investigations between Saga Norén, a Swedish police detective, played by Sofia Helin, and her Danish counterpart, Martin Rohde, played by Kim Bodnia. In the third and fourth Thure Lindhardt plays Henrik Sabroe, the Danish counterpart.

Light goes out on the Øresund Bridge, connecting Malmö and Copenhagen for 45 seconds. When the power is restored, a body is found directly on the border line. Both Saga Norén, lead homicide detective in Malmö and Martin Rohde, lead homicide detective in Copenhagen arrive on the scene. Rohde allows an ambulance with Charlotte Söringer and her husband Göran Söringer, who needs a heart transplant, to cross back into Sweden over Norén's objections. When the body, identified as Kerstin Ekwall, the chairman of Malmö city counci, is moved, it comes apart at the waist. The coroner identifies the upper part of the body as Ekwall’s, but the lower part belongs to someone else who has been deep-frozen for over a year. Rohde matches the lower body with a previous missing case and identifies it as Monique Brammer, a Danish prostitute. Rohde lives with his current wife Mette, three children and his eldest son from a previous marriage, August. The police identify the license plate of the bridge drop car, leading them to reporter, Daniel Ferbé. Ferbé is then trapped in his car with a timed device, leading him and police to suspect a bomb, but turns out to be the timed release of a recorded message instead. The message is from someone who wants to draw attention to various social problems.

Rohde and Norén interrogate Ferbé at the station asking him not to leave the country. The recorded message from the CD is also found published on a website; the police locate the server of the website to the Copenhagen police station. A caller to a radio show calling himself Jorgen confesses to the murder of Monique; meanwhile a voice actor comes forward to the Swedish police claiming he recorded the message on the CD three years ago as part of a project he was hired to do. Ferbé starts receiving calls and emails from the murderer with material to support his accusations; he publishes his findings. Stefan by chance discovers the record of a young homeless woman and recognizes her as his little sister Sonja; they both have similar marks on their arms. He starts searching for her, but just as he finds her she collapses. Rohde reopens the case of Monique and obtains her diary. At home Rohde copes with tensions between his current family and his son August; meanwhile Norén picks up a guy, Anton, in a bar and has sex at her place. Charlotte manages to get her husband his heart transplant even after the refusal of the donor's father. After Göran wakes from anesthesia, he tells Charlotte that he wants to split up; shortly thereafter he suffers a relapse and is declared dead. Norén notices a stamp mark on Ekwall's body leading the police to a slaughter house where they find Ekwall's lower body; Ferbé is contacted by the murderer a second time.

Norén investigates the poisoning of water among a homeless community which left 10 people dead. Goran's daughter Maja returns home. A homeless man Bjorn is stunned and kidnapped by the killer; meanwhile Ferbé appears on a news show discussing the murderer and the problems in society as mentioned by the killer. Norén and Rohde visit Sojan at the hospital for questioning regarding the poisoning; they also meet Stefan there. The killer who becomes known as 'truth terrorist' releases a live video feed of Bjorn tied to a chair to Ferbé along with names and photographs of four rich Swedish and Danish property developers including Charlotte's dead husband Göran; shortafter Bjorn manages to set himself free but is again captured by the kidnapper. Norén and Rohde visit Charlotte for questioning. The stun gun used during the kidnapping leads the police to a retired police officer Lennart Fransson who signed out the gun from police custody; Lennart is found dead in his home, shot on his head. A young girl Anja after a row with her mother leaves home; spending the night outside she is invited by a stranger to his house. At home Rohde confronts August about his behavior at home; August seems to symphatise with the truth terrorist. The killer demands a ransom of 20 millions, five millions from each of the four men, for the survival of Bjorn; Bjorn meanwhile tries to sent a message using Morse code by ticking his eyes.

Next day Anja goes into the same apartment again but the owner doesn't seem to recognize her; he later receives a parcel with a katana in it. Bjorn's morse code leads Rohde to the men's home at where Bjorn previously stayed; coincidently he meets Stefean there. The police calls Charlotte and the three other realtors to discuss the ransom demand; the four unanamosly decide against paying. Charlotte and Maja visit the displayed body of Goran where they meet Emilie Hanson, a friend of Goran whom Charlotte recognizes as 'Em', the mysterious name from Goran's contact. Charlotte realises that Goran and Emilie were having an affair; Emilie seems to know Maja which makes Charlotte leave the place without Maja in anger. Charlotte decides to pay the entire amount herself as a revenge on her dead husband and Maja. Morse code from Bjorn leads the police to a building; following a fight between Rohde and the killer they finally rescue Bjorn but the killer manages to escape. Mette revels to Rohde that she is pregnant. Noren suggests to Rohde that the killer didn't kill him even though he had a chance because he may need Rohde in his plan.

Lars murders his paychatrist and tries to kill himself but is overpowered by others in the clinic. A number of similar murders take place in Malmo and Copenhagen by achzifernics; The killer takes responsibilities of the attacks through Fye highliting the cuts in the psychiatric programs. Soren attacks Stefan at his home; Rhodes visit him for questioning. Charlotte calls Rohde to her house and seduces him into having sex. On interogatting, Lars revels that the killer has blue eyes, is all and wears scaf and glovea. The police identify Anja as the lodger at Lars house through CCTV and begin searching for her. Norén shows up at Rohde' house to share the intel on Anja; During dinner with the family, she also tells Rohde that Charlotte dropped his wallet off at the station. At the bar Norén again meets the guy from other night, Anton, and they have sex. The police find Anja shot at a parking lot; she later dies at the hospital.

Henning, a police officer who along with three other officers, was recently acquitted of murder of an immigrant after a trial disappears. Suspecting Stefan to be the killer, Norén and Rohde search his apartment finding several medical supplies and blood and arrests him; he is realesed later due to insufficient evidence. Husni's brother Saif receives a key in the mail that belongs to the basement of their shop; he finds Henning tied there. A video is relaesed on the killer's website hinting the killing of Hennings; meanwhile The killer reaches out to Faye highligtging the plights of the immigrants in the society. Saif informs a friend about Henning who is later arrest during the riots. Mette learns of Rohde's affair with Charlotte, while Rohde learns that his son August has spent the night at Norén‘s flat. Saifs father catches Saif with Henning in the basement and release him; he is shortly shot dead by a man in riot police uniform whom the police suspects to be the killer. Norén suspects that the killer may indeed be a cop.

The killer highjacks a school bus with five children. Due to the killer's knowledge of police procedures, Norén think he must be a police officer. The killer releases the final problem to Faye emailing him pictures highlighting exploitation of children; while Mette meets Sebastian Sandstrod, a salesman of IT softwares. Norén and Rohde question Sonja after she wakes up; on shown pictures of suspected Swedish and Danish police officers, she reacts violently towards the photo of Jesper Anderson, a retired Swedish officer; the police starts searching for him. The killer releases a video of the five captured children and urges the public to attack five company premises that uses child labour; meanwhile Ferbé is fired after he refuses to not publish about it. The body of Soren Hokmgren is found and Stefan is arrested. The police find the school bus at the warehouse of one of the mentioned companies; while inspecting the bus, the warehouse catches fire. The children are released after the five company premises have been torched by the public. After Mette kicks Rohde out of the house, he spends the night at Norén‘s. The killer lures Ferbé, offering an interview, but instead kills him with poisonous gas in his car.

The police arrest Jasper Anderson as the primary suspect. Norén and Rohde question Jasper trying to esblaish connectiona between him and the victims but later he manages to escape from the police station with the help of a friend. Norén and Rohde raid one of his places and finds a BDSM dungeon with camera equipments. While trying to flee the city, Jasper is shot by the police; pornographic material is recovered from him indicating he and his partner were sexually abusing and filming underage girls. Anton visits Norén at the station asking her for dinner; meanwhile August's friend Frida asks him out for dinner date. The police works out the identity of a Danish police officer, Jens Nielsen, who could be TT given his connections with the victims; but Rohde informs that he is dead as he blew off his head after his wife and child died at a car crash.

Norén learns that Jen's wife, Mikaela was coming to stay with a friend after leaving Jen’s house as she was having an affair and wanted to divorce Jen. Rohde confesses to Noren that he was the one having affair with Mikaela. The police trace Jen's bank records following his supposed death, leading them to Sebastian Sandstrod; meanwhile Sebastian meets Mette at her house. Returnig from a job interview August coincidently encounters his ex girlfriend Frida who revels that she never chatted with him online. After identifying X as the Truth Terrorist, Norén and Rohde go to his home, where they learn that Mette is his next target, as a consequence of Rohde's onetime affair with Jen's wife. TT takes Mette and her children on a day out and traps her in an empty house, placing an active grenade in her hands. August informs Rohde about Frida. The police saves Mette and the children while Jen kidnaps August.
