User:DMahalko/WikiProject Council/Directory/Online Periodicals Citation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This Wikiproject is somewhat unusual in that it does not fit well into the rest of the hierarchy. These wikiprojects each focus on one specific periodical and then attempt to cite all possible potentially useful information within each published issue of that periodical.

Citations from periodicals need to be noteworthy. Some pop-culture magazines listed on this project page contain large amounts of entertainment material that is not particularly notable. However, some of this material becomes more revelant as the material ages, and it becomes a tool to describe historical trends and past cultural beliefs and ideals.

This wikiproject will never be finished, since as time progresses more periodicals are created by the publishers.

Participation[edit]

To Participate in these citation projects, editors look through periodicals accessible through online archiving services such as Google Books.

These editors find relevant articles in Wikipedia, cite information from each issue in the article, and create new sections in the article if needed to summarize the cited information. They also include a URL in the cite linking back to the relevant article in the online archive, and include hidden tracking categories for the periodical and Google Books citations.

Example citation:

To help other editors of these projects know what has been done, a notation is made in the related wikiproject by the editor, listing the wikipedia article name where the cite was placed, a brief description of the citation, and the editor's username (generated with ~~~ )

For example, this would be added to the Popular Science wikiproject:

February 1919 Popular Science Monthly

  • Aircraft carrier - early aircraft carriers in World War 1 such as HMS Furious and HMS Argus - DMahalko (talk)
  • Airmail - how World War I pushed forward flight advancements applied to mail delivery - DMahalko (talk)
  • Automobile safety - pop-closed shields to protect against flying glass in an accident - DMahalko (talk)

Some project pages may eventually need to be split into subsections to manage the large collection of article citations.
