Panagiotis "Pete" Anastasopoulos (greek: Παναγιώτης "Πιτ" Αναστασόπουλος, May 25, 1987 - September 2, 2021), known professionally as Mad Clip (Money And Drugs Can't Live In Poverty) was a Greek-American rapper and singer. He was a founding member of the Capital Music record label. His singles include the sleeper hit Dealer, Kotera and Sinthikes, as well as many collaboration songs including Mama? featuring Sin Boy, YPO and iLLEOo, one of the most popular and most controversial songs of Greek hip hop. He released four studio albums including Super Trapper and Super Trapper 2.

Taki Tsan helped him with his first single Eimai Trelos and he went on to become one of the pioneers of mumble rap and trap music in Greece. Many of his songs have over 10 million views on YouTube.

Anastasopoulos died after a car crash on September 2, 2021. Along with famous pop star Eleni Foureira and fellow rapper FY, he had been performing at the wedding of a music video director and record producer shortly before the crash. Anastasopoulos was deeply mourned by fellow musicians and his death has had a distinct impact on the music industry and has raised awareness on driving under the influence.

Early life and career in the United States

Panagiotis Anastasopoulos was born on May 25, 1987 in New York City and had stated in interviews he was raised in the Springfield Gardens area of Queens. His father was a Greek immigrant and his mother came from a Greek-American family.

He grew up listening to Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., his favourite rapper and idol.

His father insisted in taking the family back to Greece, but he separated from his mother and subsequently divorced her. Anastasopoulos lived in New York at the time. However, he was soon drafted to Greece to do his mandatory military service. He spent months in military prison, eventually fleeing to Nicosia and Ayia Napa in Cyprus, where he met and collaborated with lifelong friend Drew Astro. It has been speculated, but not confirmed that Anastasopoulos worked as a drug dealer at the time.

Astro eventually arranged a meeting between Anastasopoulos and Jojo and Russell Simmons of Def Jam Recordings. They were impressed by him, but it did not stick financially.

MadClip then moved to London with his then girlfriend. He later moved to Athens, where he accidentally met Taki Tsan, who was already a popular rapper in Greece. Tsan persuaded Anastasopoulos to rap in Greek and Mad Clip's first single Eimai Trelos was released.

Career with Capital Music

He first collaborated with Capital rapper Light on the single Yayo and then on his breakthrough sleeper hit Dealer. He subsequently signed with the popular record label.

He continued making songs with the popular Sinthikes and then released his debut album O Amerikanos. He went on to release songs including Kotera, Elpida, Montecristo, Presidente and many collaboration songs. These include Fimi featuring Josephine) and Mporei featuring Eleni Foureira). He was featured on Sin Boy's 2019 hit, Mama?, along with fellow rappers YPO and iLLEOo. He has extensively collaborated with record producer Skive.

He has released four albums, O Amerikanos, Super Trapper, Super Trapper 2 and Still Active, and one EP, (O Gemistiras).

Death and legacy

Anastasopoulos, famous Eurovision Song Contest singer Eleni Foureira and fellow rapper FY attended and performed at the wedding of George Mpenioudakis, a music video director and producer before parting ways to return to their estates. Around 2:30 at night, MadClip's Porsche crashed near Greek capital Athens and he was drafted to a nearby hospital, where his death was confirmed. Videos of fellow rapper and close friend Light crying and collapsing on the spot surfaced on YouTube. It was speculated Anastasopoulos drove too fast and under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

MadClip's death has had a distinct impact on the music industry and has raised awareness on driving too fast and under the influence of illegal substances. In addition to pop stars Foureira and Josephine, fellow rappers Snik, FY, YPO and Toquel all paid tributes to the late rapper and encouraged fans not to make the same mistakes he did. Among those paying tribute to the rapper's death was Kostantinos Pantelidis, the brother of the late Greek singer Pantelis Pantelidis, who also died on a similar car crash five years before. Comparisons between the two deaths arose on social media. Anastasopoulos' death was followed by the death of highly acclaimed composer Mikis Theodorakis. Because of his death, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the three subsequent days to be three days of national mourning. During these days, both the important composer and the controversial rapper were deeply mourned.

During his short career, many critics judged MadClip's songs negatively because of their themes of easy money, drugs, organized crime and sex. However, MadClip had also made songs acclaimed throughout his career and had been praised for his flow.
