War in the Pacific - Admirals Edition ... Is a development of Matrix Games War in the Pacific. It is a completely new game however, sharing little but the title with the original. New map, new order of battle and New AI.
Map
[edit]The map covers the world from the west coast of the USA to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean(E-W), from Alaska to New Zealand (N-S). It includes all the combat zones involved in the conflict There are several "off map boxes" allowing transit to areas such as the UK, Canada. Eastern USA, Balboa, Cristobal, Port Stanley, Cape Town, Mombasa, Aden and Abadan. The scale is 40 nautical miles per hex. Visually the map is stunning.
Game Scale
[edit]Turn length is selectable from 1 to 3 days. Ships are individual ships, Ground units are squads upward, Aircraft are squadron detachments upward. The game starts on December 7th 1941, with the Attack on Pearl Harbour and can potentially run until 1946.
Order of Battle
[edit]The OOB is truly impressive containing every major nation involved in the conflict and most of the minor combatants. The Command and Control system is very detailed, involving assigning units to higher headquarters to expidite supply and reinforcements. Commanders are replaceble and rated for differing factors such as inspiration and aggressivness. Most if not all ship captains can be changed.
Logistics
[edit]An army fights on it's stomach. The logisitcs system involves Supply which is food, water, ammo and Aircraft Fuel. Fuel which is ship fuel. These are produced from oil and rescources, which have to be transported to refineries and industry.
Gameplay
[edit]The gameplay is very detailed and time consuming. The basic idea is to build bases to get your bombers in range to hit strategic targets. To build a base you first have to invade the hex using ground troops. This requires carefull planning. The required amount of ships have to be in place to transport the invading troops. The troops have to be trained. Supply must be available, fuel must be available for the ships. Naval support needs to be available. Carrier air support have to be trained. It all takes time. Once the hex has been secured combat engineers are landed and construction begins.
