Craterostigma is a genus of shrub-like flowering plants in the

The word 'craterostigma' comes from two Greek words, krateros meaning cup-shaped and stigma, part of the female reproductive part of a flower.[1]

c hochst. flora 24, 668 1841 perennials, stems reduced or elongate. leaves in basal rosette or in pairs along the stem, entire flowers few in the axils or bract-like leaves or crowded in small terminal heads or rarely solitary. Calyx tubular, 5 lobed, lobes subequal, ribbed or winged, shorter than the tube. Petals tubular, 2 lipped, adaxial lip concave, entire or notched; abaxil lip 3 lobed; lobes broad, subequal. stamens 4; adaxial pair adnate to abaxial lip with a swollen appendage at the base of the filament; anther lobes divaricate. ovary 2 locular; style elongate, often curved and persisting in fruit; stigma 2 lipped; capsule oblong, included with the sepals, 2 valved.

20 species: tropical and s Africa and Madagascar. Mostly herbs of wet places, some species such as c monroi S Moore, C. gracile Pilger and C.linearifolium Engler are frequently found submerged. his genus is very similar to Lindernia

There are fourteen other species of this genus in Africa, including one which extends to Arabia. [3]
