Civico Museo di Storia Naturale di Trieste is a natural history museum in Trieste, northern Italy.
History
[edit]The museum was opened as a zoological museum in 1846 with the name "Cabinet Zoological Zootomico". In 1855, under the protectorate of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, the museum was renamed "Museo Civico Ferdinand Maximilian". Through many donations, the museum had developed a range of exhibits. While keeping the zoological address, it now had flora, geological, and paleontological exhibits and a vast library that contained works in various languages. In 2008, the museum was closed and relocated to reopen in 2010 as the "Museum of Natural History Trieste".[1]

The Halls
[edit]Wunderkammer
[edit]"Wunderkammer is a place where a collection of curiosities and rarities is exhibited".[2] The museum has a hall dedicated to the original "Cabinet of Curiosities" that was established in 1846. The museum states on their official website that the hall is "a fundamental nucleus of any museum". [1]
The Scientific Cabinet
[edit]The Scientific Cabinet showcases the Enlightenment Period from the late 1700's. Its exhibits include apothecary stations, alchemist labs, and the natural sciences.
Fossilization
[edit]The Hall of Fossilization is dedicated to paleontology. The museum teaches guests how fossilization occurs and offers visuals to help them understand the concepts. The museum displays various species of various sizes that have been fossilized over time.
Antonio
[edit]This hall contains Antonio, one of the most complete dinosaurs that have been collected.[3] Along with Antonio, there are other fossils on display such as a vertebrae, a pelvis, and a disarticulated skull. There are also plants, crocodiles, and shrimps on display from the same period.[1]
The Food Chain
[edit]This hall consists of three rooms. The first two rooms contain a parade of animals corresponding to their place of the food chain. The third room takes visitors into the city to observe the food chain and inner workings in a modern setting.
