Bombus pyrrhopygus, the Arctic bumblebee (Finnish: tunturikimalainen, Swedish: polarhumla[1], Norwegian: polarhumle), is a bumblebee in subgenus Alpinobombus. It is native to the Old World above the Arctic Circle. In 2019, B. pyrrhopygus was listed as Near Threatened on Finland's Red List.[2]
Distribution
[edit]The species occurs in northeastern Europe above the Arctic circe. It is known from Norway, western and northern Sweden, alpine meadows and heaths in the Lapland fells of Finland,[2] and far northwestern Russia, including Murmansk Oblast, Kolguev Island, and Novaya Zemlya.
Studies into bumblebee fauna on various Siberian islands have helped reveal B. pyrrhopygus's distribution and environmental tolerances. For example, on Kolguev Island, where rodents such as lemmings are scarce and dig few burrows for bumblebees to use as nesting sites, B. pyrrhopygus nonetheless co-occurs with four other bumblebee species.[3]
