"Falling out/Blacking out" is a culture-bound syndrome where the individual experiences dizziness and a spinning sensation before a sudden collapse. Although the eyes may be open, the person reports being unable to see, although they hear and understand what is happening around them without being able to interact.[1]
Based on studies during the 1970's today it is not known how this syndrome affects African Americans. However, it is questionable that it occurs in people of African descent living in the United States more so than among other ethnic groups. Studies also show that most Haitians report having known someone who has fallen out.[2]
