Donald Dewane Johnson, Jr. (born November 29, 1984), is an American Biophysical Chemist.

Early years

Raised in a small Northwest Houston Suburb, Johnson was homeschooled by his mother until the tenth grade. He went on to attend the Chinquapin School for high school. While at Chinquapin, his general interest in science lead him to Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. In 2008, Johnson received his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry with Honors and Distinction. Not knowing if he was interested in pursuing an M.D. or an M.D./PhD, he spent two years at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, as a Post-baccalaureate Intramural Research Fellow. In the first two months of the NIH fellowship, Johnson realized that he was more interested in bench research, so he applied to 11 PhD, chemistry programs. From the 11 acceptances, Johnson choose the University of California, San Diego Biophysical Chemistry PhD program in the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department.

Research Interest

Don is interested in developing nanoscale drug delivery systems.

Scientific Training

Don's training started at the Occidental College under Eileen M. Spain. While working for Dr. Spain, Don worked on developing nanoscale scaffolding materials from Silver(Ag) and Gold(Au) nanoparticles. Don's Honors thesis, Interfacial Studies of Ag nanoparticles, detailed his four year detailed study of superlattices made from Ag nanoparticles. From these studies, a
