History[edit]

Riley and Matthew White met through a Craigslist add in 2013 and bonded over their shared admiration of The Beatles and My Bloody Valentine. They soon recruited Ursula Burgess (bass, vocals) and began to play shows in the Bay Area. Burgess quit shortly thereafter and was replaced on bass for a few shows by Christian Riley, then longer-term by Jeff Holt. The group also added Mark Lynn on guitar for a short period before being reduced to the power trio of Riley, White, and Holt (which only played a show or two). After White's relocating to Portland the band released its first record, "Devolver" (recorded and mixed by White over the previous few years), on Bandcamp. Then followed a period of rapid-lineup changes characterized by constantly changing drummers. The band nevertheless played many shows during this period, and occasionally surprised audiences by performing entire sets of Guided By Voices covers, in one instance covering the entire Bee Thousand album start to finish.

Riley is also a scientist with a Ph.D. in bioinformatics and over 50 peer-reviewed articles on which he is a co-author in PubMed, and is an ultrarunner.
