West Country and Women in Green
[edit]Tomorrow your West Country initiative will be officially starting. I'm not too sure how you would like it to be announced on Women in Red. You already have a short list of missing articles on women from Devon which could serve as a basis, particularly if it could be expanded to cover Cornwall and the other parts of the West Country. Maybe Megalibrarygirl would be interested in creating a list for WiR (although it might prove to be rather difficult as I was unable to turn up any useful lists or sets of biographies)? I was also wondering whether we should make an official announcement of Women in Green. Any suggestions on how we could handle it? Perhaps Rosie has some ideas about this too?--Ipigott (talk) 06:51, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
- I am working on an announcement for Women in Green. I believe it will be published on Sunday. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:20, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
No it's not tomorrow, when we said July-August we were thinking late July to August but I believe Rod will be away until August 6. It'll be August for three weeks now I think. August 8 it will start.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:52, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Dr. Blofeld and Rosiestep: Would it maybe be a good idea to add the Devon women to a country redlist for England? Megalibrarygirl (talk) 18:26, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
Sounds good, we've got another five weeks before the contest begins so I'm something will be drawn up by then!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:27, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
- For the record, I announced it at Wikimania during my presentation; there's a youtube of that and Commons has my slidedeck. I've been interviewed by Italian press as well as US press and have spoken about WiG each time. I think some of those interviews will be published over the weekend. There's at least 1 more interview coming up where I'll again speak about WiG. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:47, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
You have a link? Haha Project WIG, I love it! Hope we'll see some more takers for the top 100 list entries soon. I've begun drafting Audrey but not really feeling motivated right now!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:52, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
Rosiestep, is there a link then for the video?♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:47, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Jazz in der Kirche
[edit]The article Jazz in der Kirche has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- No real content or references. The German article has no citations and the only link is 404. Notability not established.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Dubbinu | t | c 11:22, 6 July 2016 (UTC)
- Note I have deleted that article due to our WP:CSD#A7 policy that calls for the deletion of articles "about an organized event (tour, function, meeting, party, etc.), which does not credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject".
- You may recreate this article if you are able to meet our basic standards of significance. If you would like the deleted text I can restore it to your user space if you like. HighInBC Need help? {{ping|HighInBC}} 13:32, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

Ignore you? Never!
[edit]I'm sorry I didn't respond promptly to your post on my talk page. I didn't see the article until after Miyagawa improved it. I always admire your ability to rally the troops to improve articles, and I like jumping on the bandwagon to contribute. The idea of a Sinatra editathon with competition and prizes, though, is not my cup of tea. Best, Yoninah (talk) 12:03, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
It wouldn't be a "competition" Yoninah, it would be an editathon. Two weeks of editing Sinatra content around his birthday annually. Oh well, I thought it was a good idea.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:22, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
- Editathons are fine with me. Just draw up a list and we'll go to it! Yoninah (talk) 18:42, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

- Thanks Gerda. The article could do with re-researching now to 2016 standards as there'll be a lot of books with good sources on him. There's some unsourced paragraph endings in there and some additions from others, but as early 2007 FAs go it's not bad! Does need updating sometime though.. Anybody could currently argue that it should be delisted as an FA..♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:46, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

I never thanked you enough for your wonderful copyediting in the Sonam Kapoor article. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. FrB.TG (talk) 08:36, 13 July 2016 (UTC) |
Cheers FrB.TG that was a long time ago now!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:02, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
- Well I don't think I expressed enough gratitude at the time. Anyway so I was expanding yet another list – Quentin Tarantino filmography and I recalled a little discussion about him. Who do you think are the best modern film directors. Nolan, Scorsese, Spielberg, Tarantino, Coen brothers and Eastwood are among those I admire. FrB.TG (talk) 18:00, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
Been a while since Tarantino made a great film.. Alejandro González Iñárritu, Alexander Payne, Paul Thomas Anderson are some of my favourites aside from those you mentioned. David Lynch, David Fincher and Steven Soderberg would rank highly.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:15, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
- I think they're all great except Payne and Anderson as I am not much familiar with their work (need to see their work though). Funny I was watching Soderberg's Traffic today but got distracted after the 20 minutes. You mentioning him was kind of a reminder to get back to it. FrB.TG (talk) 21:53, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
@FrB.TG: I urge you to see all of Payne's and Andersons' films asap, they're really among the very best. They haven't made that many films either so you could see them in a short time period! Sideways and There Will Be Blood are in my top ten of best 2000s films!♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:57, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- Watching Sideways now. FrB.TG (talk) 16:43, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- Okay so I watched the film and I think it was great. I didn't recognize many of the actors, just the protagonist (from a cheesy role in There's Something About Mary). It had really great moments and some scenes between Miles and Maya were really heartbreaking. Great film, thanks for the recommendation! FrB.TG (talk) 20:47, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
Not sure what actor you're referring to. Paul Giamatti wasn't in Mary. You should have recognized him, he's undoubtedly one of the best living actors in Hollywood!! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:56, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- Oh boy, I think I confused him for another actor. Yeah, he is definitely a really great actor – saw his filmography; seen many of his work. I see that you've only seen Zootopia from 2016; how was it? FrB.TG (talk) 21:05, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
I've seen Independence Day and Dirty Grandpa too from 2016!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:09, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
Draft geonotice etc for The West Country Challenge
[edit]Could you take a look at a draft request for a geonotice for The West Country Challenge at User:Rodw/sandbox. I will also draft some text for a notice to go on talk pages of projects + county articles & major towns/cities in the region at some point. Feel free to edit.— Rod talk 20:02, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
@Rodw: Yes a geonotice is ideal. I do think we'll maximise the chances of more people joining though if we mention winning £250 in Amazon vouchers. I was thinking of something short and sweet like "Win up to £250 in Amazon vouchers for participating in The West Country Challenge between 8 and 28 August!". We probably don't need to relay all of the counties, people will click it and see anyway. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:12, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- If the vouchers haven't been agreed (yet) it may be false advertising to plug them.— Rod talk 20:14, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- We'll have to wait until it's approved yup. I don't think it'll be too long on this one as WMUK know that the Dragon one was a big success.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:23, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
@Rodw: Should be OK now as the grant has been approved.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:13, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
- OK shall I put in the geonotice request? Also can you take a look at my sandbox for the draft notice for talk pages of projects and county/city articles?— Rod talk 17:18, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
Go for it yup Rodw, make sure that the prize is mentioned though!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:51, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
- Done see Wikipedia:Geonotice#Wikipedia:WikiProject England/The West Country Challenge.— Rod talk 17:54, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
Do you want me to start putting the notice (draft in User:Rodw/sandbox ) on the project pages & key articles?— Rod talk 08:49, 16 July 2016 (UTC) @Rodw: Give it another week I think, perhaps do it on 24-25th July, that'll give a two week notice then. Just drawn up the rules and scoring. I altered the ruling slightly for GAs though to allow people to progressively work on things throughout the month.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:59, 16 July 2016 (UTC)
- OK but you may have to do it as I am away on holiday from 22nd & internet access will only be via pub wifi.— Rod talk 18:54, 16 July 2016 (UTC)
@Rodw: Perhaps do it on the 21st then before you go?♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:30, 16 July 2016 (UTC)

Eega
[edit]Hi Doctor. Hope everything is fine. Exactly after a month, i am resuming work on Eega. It already had a copy-edit by Baffle gab1978 of the GOCE. Though nothing has been restored to normalcy in my RL, i decided to give this another attempt and am hoping to make it a better article this time. I would begin it with a peer review tomorrow. Drummer Chris Columbo
[edit]While working on the Atlantic City clubs, I found a lot of information on Chris Columbo. A very interesting fellow-he was a musician for many, many years and was still playing at the Showboat in AC until his 1990s stroke. He lived to be 100 and was most generous with his time as far as giving it to interviewers and local historians for discussing the bygone times and music. Would like to expand his bio and also that of Skinny D'Amato. We hope (talk) 21:11, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
Didn't he work as a jazz musician and detective on a ship for years and discover the New World ;-) Agree, these are interesting places and characters, if we could get some GAs out of this it would be great. You and Yoninah are starting to put my own researching skills to shame though, you're showing me up as an over the hill editor now! How you find so much beats me!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:17, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
Northern Africa contest
[edit]The United Nations definition of "North Africa" includes seven countries and territories; Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, and Western Sahara.
To me, this means the Northern Africa contest should not include any country east or northeast of Egypt, which are not in Africa. That expanse is more than enough to work on in one month. What would you advise?--Dthomsen8 (talk) 21:26, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I agree, but I thought relaxing the boundary to include part of the Middle East in with it would attract more contributors like Al ameerson. Obviously people who want to contribute to just North Africa can do that, and people who want to contribute to just Middle East can do that.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:38, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

Bells Across the Meadows
[edit]You kindly noticed me expanding Bells Across the Meadows, - can you also help expanding further? It came without a source for being #36 most popular tune in 2003, also I guess it should be most popular classical tune. Meant to be linked in the blurb of th 9 August TFA, - it's mentioned but with only two unsourced sentences, I didn't want to link it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:35, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

- Cantatas would be expanding, - still many stubs ;) - New are more the performers. More red links on BWV 161, which is up for FAC, DYK? - Will nominate the Bells now, added three recordings, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:33, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

DYK for 500 Club (Atlantic City, New Jersey)
[edit]On 5 August 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 500 Club (Atlantic City, New Jersey), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that while top-name talent like Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Martin and Lewis performed at Atlantic City's 500 Club, an illegal casino operated behind the scenes? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/500 Club (Atlantic City, New Jersey). B4008 road
[edit]I decided to do the B4008 as well last night as Wikipedia didn't have a Wiki page for it plus wasn't sure if Wikiproject Gloucestershire accepted roads within Gloucestershire etc for the West County Challenge (Please edit the Challenge page if required to state this), Feel free to contact me if this is correct or not. D Eaketts (talk) 08:06, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
@D Eaketts: Yep that's fine, though to start claiming points and the £10 voucher for most work in one day you'll need to edit Bristol articles over the next three days. If you don't want to win anything and are happy just contributing to Gloucestershire throughout that's fine too, just keep adding the article on the main page, cheers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:33, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Ok, see what I can do from today. D Eaketts (talk) 08:39, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
- @D Eaketts: I don't want to pour cold water on your efforts, but minor roads that run through the middle of nowhere are generally not considered particularly notable, so I've redirected it per previous precedent in a number of places (eg: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/A4032 road, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/B2177 road (2nd nomination)). Now, it is possible to turn that around and show that such a route was popular with highwaymen, coaching inns, accidents or WW2 bombs, in which case it does deserve a standalone article; however in those cases you tend to find the article ends up better with a different name (eg: see the textbook example of Ipswich Road, Colchester which we managed to turn into a genuinely notable encyclopedia article). Now, the good news is that there are several street articles around Bristol that do need some work and you'll easily get points for - Gloucester Road, Bristol is one, and I'm tinkering away at Stokes Croft, which is another. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:18, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Oh I dunno, there's quite a lot of B roads in Wales for instance which you could write a decent start class article about. As long as there's a few sources I think the encyclopedia is better off having them! Welcome aboard Ritchie333, there's £10 Amazon voucher to win every day of this, for most work done on county in focus. So if anybody wanted to buy a few books (or CDs) and not have to pay for them this is a good way to get a helping hand ;-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:25, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Do you want me to leave it as a new article or change to a redirct or just wait to see what happens. D Eaketts (talk) 11:28, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Keep it for now I think, but really needs some work and decent sources if it is to stick. As it is currently it should be redirected, but let's give you a chance to work on it first!♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:49, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
- Okay, we'll run it for the contest and if nothing happens I think a redirect is best. I certainly wouldn't AfD it because I don't think the article should be outright deleted. Part of the problem with these things is that the number you see on road signs is often the last part of the entire project, and hence a search for sources is difficult; for example, the working title of the M32 (there's an article to improve right there!) was the "Bristol Parkway", and sure enough a search for sources will get you a ton of false positives with Bristol Parkway railway station. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:58, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

- Just looking at what to do next for the Bristol bit. I've found a couple in the stubs list which shouldn't have been included as they were considerably more than stubs -(eg Portland Square, Bristol, Clifton Lido and The Victoria Public House) would it be useful to
strikethroughthose which aren't stubs and those which have been improved so far as part of the competition (eg Carriage Works, Bristol, Central Police Station, Bristol, Pen Park Hole etc).— Rod talk 13:13, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, there might be a few needing removing, always good to check!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:44, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
I see you removed Cary Grant from Core articles "as already a GA" - lots of the others are GA or FA. When I set this up I didn't know they should be excluded.— Rod talk 19:18, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
@Rodw: Yeah, the idea was to only include articles which are below GA. Certainly articles already FA should not be on the list. I guess people can further improve GAs but the idea I think is to be improving those articles which really need the work and getting to GA status. I'll restore it if you wish, but with the Welsh list I excluded articles already GA and FA.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:20, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
- I think you need to go through all 7 core article lists as lots of the entries are GA or FA - often the articles about counties etc - I had no idea you wanted them excluded.— Rod talk 19:34, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
- Well they've got to be articles that people can work on. Most articles promoted need a lot less work than most other articles.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:10, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Working on this but not trying for prizes. I've destubbed Alderman Proctor's Drinking Fountain and expanded Ding Dong mines, do they need to leave the lists or what? Thanks! We hope (talk) 12:43, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
Ding Dong Mines ;-) Excellent work, I'll add them to the main list! Are you sure? It's just a bit of fun and an Amazon voucher could buy you a book for further work here!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:30, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
- I don't always work quickly enough. When I start researching something, if I find something else that seems interesting, I'm off to look that up too. ;) We hope (talk) 14:03, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
OK. Collaborations are permitted for this anyway. Just looking at King Street, Bristol and saying to Ritchie333 that most of the buildings should probably be merged if they can't be destubbed. The old library of course and probably a few others are justified in their own right though. I think that would be an interesting one to develop.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:07, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

Did you know that it didn't appear? Hope it will eventually. - Expanding Büning, - isn't that nice that she wrote on Pollini whom I heard two days ago in a place we "created" together? ... that I took this image? A spoken message at the begin of the concert said that he had chosen the first set, pieces by Schönberg, to honour Pierre Boulez. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:07, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
What didn't appear?♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:07, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
- Bells across the meadows, was pulled from the queue, but somehow the bot missed that. I wonder what will happen. The source for the hook was questioned, I had to go, Softlavender took care of it, - it's approved again, but I wonder what will happen next if some bot remembers that it "appeared". I wrote about six compositions, hoping that two would complement Ketèlbey as TFA, - one did for 2 hours. Music-making is better ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:14, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
That's strange, I hadn't noticed!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:09, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
- It looks like kind of an edit conflict between the pulling and the set going to the Main page, - no idea what needs to be done. Asked at DYKTALK. - Different question: could you look at FAC Komm, du süße Todesstunde, BWV 161? Wehwalt caught most of the details, I bet ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:18, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
I've already got three reviews to do I think!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:19, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
- No problem, just asking. It's short ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:24, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
- ps: the stats were not bad for the Bells, because the fact was mentioned in the TFA blurb for Ketèlbey. For DYK, the same thing was not sourced enough ;) - it is now. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:28, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, being in the TFA summary certainly helped that!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:29, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
- I always find it amazing how many hits are generated from the mere mentioning of the article title the following days, when the summary is not there. Last day today, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:48, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
I rarely look at DYK figures, but if I'm working on a really core actor article it'll interest me to see how much traffic it gets a month/year. DYKS only typically get a few thousand hits but people like Sinatra, Grant and Hepburn get over a million hits annually. that sort of figure it more motivating I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:51, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Ravensbarrow Lodge
[edit]The article Ravensbarrow Lodge has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- No indication of notability - has been various people's address over the years, nothing more. Not a listed building.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. PamD 12:29, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
- @PamD: Hey, the current cleanup target is West Country not Cumbria ;-). Perhaps it would be better to merge it into the main settlement article? It is properly sourced after all.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:57, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
- Well we enjoyed Wainwright's Cartmel Fell walk yesterday, so I had a look at the article. Including clarifying how separate it is from Cartmel. Just can't see why Ravensbarrow Lodge should have an article - all it says is that it exists and various people have lived there over time, nothing notable at all. What inspired you to create it? (And not Moor Crag, which is grade I listed?) Am I missing something? Might rattle off another Devon parish or two, but ought to get on with lots of Real Life stuff. PamD 15:53, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
I was browsing google maps I think and saw it marked.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:14, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hmm, people can add locations to Google maps can't they - so perhaps promotion by business owner. Anyway, you may have noticed that the redlink for Moor Crag has now gone blue...! PamD 10:49, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Glad you approve. I could have gone for an FA on it but settled for GA, too many others needing basic work to worry about that. A lot of his albums and songs really need a lot of work in particular I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:41, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
Jazz charts
[edit]Ernst, I didn't know you liked Jazz. I have a question about Jazz charts. On I Can Do All Things, I removed a bunch of chart listings. Roots Music Report doesn't have an article. In AfD's, I see where CMJ can't be used for notability.
Questions are: 1) Can the charts be listed in the article? 2) Is the album notable? Bgwhite (talk) 20:26, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I think it meets notability, though contemporary jazz really isn't my thing or something I'm knowledgeable about. Perhaps EddieHugh could offer some pointers!♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:18, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
- It meets notability criteria for albums. Including radio play charts is unusual (and 67 Jazz Week-recorded "spins" in a week doesn't look impressive or worth mentioning). Links to a facebook page of images is not the way to present the information, either. Best to ask at Wikipedia:Record charts. EddieHugh (talk) 13:19, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you Ernst and EddieHugh. It did take me awhile to figure out what "Jazz" is. I've heard of Jazz (airline), Utah Jazz and Jazzy Jeff. Who knew it would be some old time music. :) Bgwhite (talk) 22:36, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Scoring for pics on West Country Challenge
[edit]On the rules about scoring the West Country Challenge says "Uploading an original photograph (no geograph or flickr photos). Each photograph has to be of a different building to get points for each. – 5 points for any subject in Bristol, 15 points for any photograph on the hotlist." - can you clarify? I've claimed 5 points for a new pic on the 2 new articles as they were not on any list, but I'm about to upload some more which were on the projects "requested photos" list.— Rod talk 07:12, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
If the photo was on the hotlist or one which was specifically requested then yup those are worth 15 points each, but you can only claim the points for one photo for one building subject, obviously you can't upload 20 of the same building and claim 20 X 15 points!♦ Dr. Blofeld
- Thanks - but perhaps the word Bristol should be updated or made generic?— Rod talk 07:31, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
- Ah, that's an error, it was intended to be generic for the main rules haha!♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:33, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

[edit]On 14 August 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Clicquot Club, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in a 1931 Prohibition-era raid on the Clicquot Club of Atlantic City, New Jersey, Federal agents "poured several thousand dollars worth of alleged whiskies and champagnes down a drain"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Clicquot Club. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Clicquot Club), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

It's a good cause, but it would be difficult to do a lot towards it given my perception of Gorman while he was alive in all honesty. I do believe beneath the troublesome facade he had a good heart and was genuinely interested in promoting women's content, but I associate some of the more bitter disputes I've experienced on wikipedia with him, and can't forget that. I know a lot of people will be dismayed to read this but it's the truth. I certainly sympathize though that he had some serious conditions which may have affected him on here, and that it was sad the way in which he passes away so young. It's a good thing though that a drive is being organized to promote content in a weak area.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:27, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

About joint GA nominations
[edit]Your excellency, SPECTRE#1,
As part of the collective global effort to attain worldwide domination of the SPECTRE organization, I recently noticed that (concerning another project) you had mentioned something to your illustrious colleague SPECTRE#2, Ghmyrtle, about how people could do joint GA nominations. As an admittedly lower-ranking member of the organization, I did not realize that it could be done, but I would be delighted if you could show me how. I would like to do a joint GA nomination with SPECTRE#2 and SPECTRE#3 (Carptrash) for the Wrecking Crew article--if they would be interested. I humbly promise to your excellency that the article will not fail GA--failure is not an option in the SPECTRE organization. We assure you that the mission will be accomplished to your satisfaction. Thanks. Garagepunk66 (SPECTRE#273543) (talk) 02:40, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, evil one, LOL.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:21, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

ZIP
[edit]Dear Dr. B,
Going thru 1,000 articles in a systematic way gave me a lot of miscellaneous info that I didn't write down. I hope my comment at User talk:Casliber was at least close to being correct. Same applies below.
I think you did a lot of bot editing to start geography/muni articles in the US with US census info. I'd meant to ask you about a specific topic: settlements that have a US post office but are not counties, towns, cities, townships, or other official municipalities. There is census data on these by ZIP code. In fact businesses generally use the ZIP code data, rather than the muni data, because it's a bit finer (smaller area) and a more consistent population size. I don't think ZIP code census data should be added to all settlements, it would just confuse things where there is muni census data. I also don't think that the large paragraphs on census data should be added to the small towns I'm talking about; more like 1-3 short sentences.
I stumbled across the ZIP code census data for an atypical example for Media, Pennsylvania, and then did a few more trying to get it down to a formula for more typical examples, e.g. Upper Strasburg, Pennsylvania (add a few later). I did find one, Lima, Pennsylvania, where the data wasn't available - perhaps they closed the post office or made it part of a larger ZIP code.
I was going to ask whether - if I can get you lists of places where this might apply - you could write and implement a bot to add a couple of sentence in these article. I hope I'm clear here and not asking too much.
Sincerely,
Smallbones(smalltalk) 15:48, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Hi Smallbones iI can't remember working much on US settlements, though I remember doing a few. I'm not really into geo stubbing or mass editing of settlements any longer. Not that I don't want to have a decent article on everywhere eventually, it's just when larger towns and cities need to much work it would be best to get them into shape first instead of worrying about tiny rural localities. It would be good if they could be improved though. I've never used automation BTW, though I did employ certain devices to speed up the creation process manually.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:52, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- OK, sorry for the confusion. Sometimes, for real small out-of-the-way historic places like Upper Strasburg, there is very little current info. My real sources might themselves be described as "small out-of-the-way and historic" so WP:OR rears it's ugly head. Just looking for something current. Thanks btw for all the things that you *actually do*, and for the encouragement on my modest stats efforts. Smallbones(smalltalk) 16:01, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Upper Strasburg, Pennsylvania looks pretty decent as unincorporated communites go, and always nice to see an image. A lot of rural localities in the US are missing simple photographs and information. So badly in places that I proposed that Wiki launches a Geograph type project years back and scaled worldwide, including the US but it never came to anything.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:12, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- I would be up for a similar Geograph-type project in the US, in fact already doing something sort of similar. See List of municipalities in Pennsylvania which is/was an informal project to get pix of the 2561 municipalities in PA. After about 3 years we're up to about 2165. Now PA is about half the area (and 20% of the population) of the United Kingdom, 46,055 sq mi (119,283 km2) so it's pretty clear even getting 1 per sq. mile would be a challenge. There are similar but even less formal projects for New Jersey and Ohio. If you have any idea how to organize it more formally, without expecting UK type results, let me know. Smallbones(smalltalk) 18:53, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
I think the best thing would be a global geograph run as a sister project here. Depends if any of the developers are interested!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:10, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
FAC mentoring scheme
[edit]You may have noticed discussions on the WP:FAC talkpage relating to various FAC issues, including the question of mentoring for first-time FAC nominators. At present only a very small percentage of the first-time noms get promoted; this can be very discouraging, and might well be turning editors away from FAC. In discussion with the FAC coordinators, Mike Christie and I have devised a simple, voluntary mentoring scheme for first-time nominators, the details of which can be found here (it hasn't gone live yet).
We hope that, as they become aware of the scheme, first-time nominators will take advantage of it. A link to the mentoring page will be included in the FAC instructions once we go live. But of course, we need mentors. We would like the scheme to kick off with a dozen or so names listed, hoping that many more will sign up eventually. Would you be prepared to act as a mentor? You incur no obligation by adding your name to the list; the extent to which you participate in the scheme is entirely a matter for you, and can vary from regular involvement to just once in a while. The objective of the scheme is to help first-time nominators who seek assistance. So please add your name here if you feel you can, or if you have queries or reservations about the scheme, please drop me a line. Brianboulton (talk) 12:34, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

In this revert, you leave me wondering how you think my version is "not correct", or how the version you reverted to is better. As I indicated in my edit summary, it can be correct with no commas or with two, depending on whether your treat the "in January 1969" as restrictive or non-restrictive; but it is wrong to treat the stuff through there as an introductory phrase, since the sentence is trying to say "Bessell further maintained that ... Thorpe called him ..." Right? Dicklyon (talk) 16:41, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
