My Mid-Term Quiz for LIBY 1210-15 Fall 2017

My Research Topic is: The origins of Hip Hop

Key words related to my Research Topic are: Hip Hop, Rap, Origins, DJ Kool Herc, Bronx, Toasting, I'm very glad you've added "Toasting" to your list of keywords. It's very helpful in tracing Hip Hop history.

Part 1:

Examine Wikipedia articles that are directly related to your Research Topic and select a substantive article to evaluate. This could be an article about an idea (e.g., I might choose the one about Trance) or a person (if I were researching Reggae music, I might pick Bob Marley). Answer the following questions:

+ ++1. I chose to read and evaluate the article titled:  DJ Kool Herc. My overall research is researching the origins of Hip Hop and within this topic I am choosing to do my research for this assignment on DJ Kool Herc.

+2. Is there a warning banner at the top of the article? No

If there is a warning banner, copy and paste the warning banner here.

Write a brief explanation of the reason the issues mentioned in the warning banner are important. For example, if the issue is “needs additional citations for verification,” why does that matter?

Please note: If the article you are evaluating does not have a warning banner, choose a warning banner from a different article and explain the warning that is in that banner.

+There was no warning banner on the DJ Kool Herc article, but within the article I found a warning banner for Grand Mixer DXT. This warning article explained that the article lacked historical information on the subject.

+3. Is the lead section of the article easy to understand? Does it summarize the key points of the article?

Yes, it is very easy to understand. It says who he is, what he is known for, who he inspired, etc. To the right of the summary in a small box it also contains the other names that he went by. It states what he discovered such as the break, b-boys and b-girls. It summarizes how he was a great influence to the founding of hip hop.

+4. Is the structure of the article clear? “Are there several headings and subheadings, images and diagrams at appropriate places, and appendices and footnotes at the end?”

Yes, it is very concise and well written. It is chronological and by this I mean that it starts with his early life and progresses to his later life. The appendices and footnotes are very organized and in order. The pictures are in appropriate places and it also gives the date of when the pictures were taken and even where they were taken. It is very organized.

+5. Are “the various aspects of the topic balanced well”? That is does it seem to provide a comprehensive overview of the topic?

Yes, it is very comprehensive but it is not too long. It gives a brief but detailed summary of who he was and all the things he did. In the early life and education aspect I noticed that they put where he was originally from (which is Jamaica) and this is very important. With my prior knowledge I know that Hip Hop originally came from the Caribbean Islands and Africa and then moved to New York. In the article they also refer to terms such as “toasting” which helped with the development of Hip Hop.

+6. Does the article provide a “neutral point of view”? Does it read like an encyclopedia article instead of a persuasive essay?

Yes, it is purely informative. They are not trying to persuade me to believe something. Everything in the article is just facts.

+7. Are the references and footnotes citing reliable sources? Do they point to scholarly and trustworthy information? Beware of references to blogs; look for references to books, scholarly journal articles, government sources, etc.

Yes, all of the references are books. They are listed clearly and they make it easy for you to be able to find the book if you wanted. They state the ISBN number within the MLA citation. I do not see any blogs, it all seems to be trustworthy information.

+8. Look for these signs of bad quality and comment on their presence or absence from the article you are evaluating:

As I looked, this article is very up to date. The last edit on the page was made October 11, 2017. The author(s) remain very active on the page and they make sure all the information is correct and up to date. DJ Kool Herc is still alive so they can constantly keep editing the page on things that he is doing up to his death.

+a. is the lead section well-written, in clear, correct English?

Yes, it is correct English. The grammar is correct, and it is easy to read.

+b. are there “unsourced opinions” and/or “value statements which are not neutral”?

No, I do not see any. I do notice that they quote things that DJ Kool Herc said himself but they make it clear that it is his quote and not the author(s) own words.

+c. does the article refer “to ‘some,’ ‘many,’ or other unnamed groups of people,” instead of specific organizations or authors or facts?

No, the article always list specifics.

+d. does the article seem to omit aspects of the topic?

No, it is very in depth.

+e. are some sections overly long compared to other sections of similar importance to the topic?

No. Some sections are longer than others but that is just because more information needed to be provided. It is not excessively long.

+f. does the article lack sufficient references or footnotes?

No.

+g. Look at the “View History” for the article. As you read the conversation there, do you see hostile dialogue or other evidence of lack of respectful treatment among the editors?

No, it is very professional.

They stay up to date on the edits and make sure to correct any incorrect information.

This article is very relevant to my research topic. My topic is the origins of hip hop and DJ Kool Herc is known as the “father of hip hop”...the creator.

It is very detailed, not too long and not to short. It was an appropriate length and still displayed all of the necessary information.
