Planned for demolition as part of the £155 million Reuben Brothers office development, Pilgrim Quarter. Art deco in style. Grade 2 listed was originally the HQ of the North Eastern Electricity Supply Company. Only front facade planned to be retained as the floor heights do not match adjacent new builds. Developer claimed the building provided only "average" office space and was in poor condition. Planning documentation revelaed that much of the original 1920s decoration survives, including a grand foyer, though hidden by the later addition of cladding and false ceilings. The original features could be readily restored. Developer plans to install a large atrium between the facade and new build office floors. The campaign group Historic Buildings and Paces note that the atrium would result "in an extremely unsatisfactory relationship between the old and the new, destroying the architectural integrity of the building". The developer plans to block off the former grand entrance with planter boxes.
