Professor Richard Hatter joined Hong Kong Polytechnic University in July 2009 as Pre Opening General Manager to plan and oversee the entire pre-opening process which occurred in 2011.

Under Professor Hatter’s leadership Hotel ICON, the world’s only independent, fully integrated upscale teaching and research institute has received extraordinary critical acclaim, the winner of over 200 major awards for website design, restaurant design, best buffet in Hong Kong for 4 consecutive years, and other lifestyle, design management and service awards.

Hotel ICON is the only Hotel in Asia and Hong Kong to rise to the rank of #3 in Trip Advisor in the first 3 months of opening and remain until the present day.

Professor Hatter also serves as Adjunct Associate Professor of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and plays an active role in teaching of Hotel Operations, Planning and Development and winter school for all levels of students and hoteliers which includes research and consultancy.

He spent 18 years with Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts where he held senior General Management and corporate director positions in development and operations, including as Director of Development overseeing renovations of all Shangri-La, Traders, Kerry, Hotel Jen and Clubs for the group from 2004-2009.

Professor Hatter previously worked with Inter Continental, Dusit Thani Hotels and Gulf Hotels and in luxury hotels and private clubs in London, the British Virgin Islands, Thailand, Indonesia, the PRC, Singapore and Hong Kong.

He began his hotel industry career in 1980.
