Frogger in Toy Town was a platformer action game developed by Q-Games as part of the Frogger game series. Players explore scrolling room-themed levels as Frogger, a frog on a mission to rescue abandoned froglets from human buildings.

The game was published by Konami in 2019 to become one of the first games distributed through Apple Arcade. After numerous major updates, it was discontinued by the platform on March 21, 2024. The service for the game, including playability, was suspended on April 4, 2024.

Gameplay[edit]

Frogger in Toy Town is a 3D scrolling platformer, featuring levels that scroll either vertically or horizontally. The chapters are divided into 5 houses with levels taking place in their rooms. Players control Frogger as he jumps through the rooms and dodges various household object-themed obstacles, such as toy cars, pins or living spring toys and helicopters, as well as by people. If Frogger is attacked by an enemy, drowns in the water or falls off-screen, the player loses a life, while losing three lives leads to the end of the game. The enemies can only be neutralized if one of them is hit or lands on another. The levels also feature neutral objects and powerups which could be devoured by Frogger and then spat out to clear the path or stop enemies. If the player picks up 100 jelly beans scattered throughout the levels, an invincibility mode is activated for a short period of time. It grants Frogger the power to defeat enemies and swim, as well as an increase in size and the length of a jump.

While levels are completed by reaching a door out of the room, several other goals are present. The main objective is to rescue froglets found in each level and guide them to a checkpoint. After a froglet is collected by the player, he follows Frogger until a checkpoint; however, if Frogger loses a life before reaching the checkpoint, all collected froglets scatter and can no longer be retrieved during a try. Other goals may include finishing without losing lives in a certain way or defeating enemies. By completing the goals, players earn tokens which are exchanged for access to bonus levels, new character costumes and the following chapters. The bonus levels involve Frogger collecting frog-shaped emeralds and have a unique setting with no automatic scrolling.

Frogger Game Show[edit]

A special episode released in honor of Peacock game show Frogger included a variation of rules similar to the one used in the show. While playing the episode, players may only lose a life when Frogger drowns in addition to removing the time interval to get out of water. Saving froglets has become a mandatory part of the game, although they already count as rescued when Frogger collects them so the checkpoints were removed. Each level of the chapter is timed and includes missions related to passing the level within a time limit. The levels also include virtual "rival" Froggers and the player must finish faster than them to advance to the next level.

Endurance Mode[edit]

An endless runner mode called Endurance Mode features a simplified version of the game with the amount of lives decreased to one. The majority of obstacles are toy cars driving from side to side and logs floating on water similar to those in Crossy Road and the original Frogger. The mode consists of three packs of alternating pre-created levels with every third stage serving as bonus. A player may score points for each move forward, finishing a level or collecting frog trophies and emeralds which are then counted and compared to the score of other players worldwide.

Plot[edit]

After a recent hurricane, lots of froglets ended up at humans' houses. Rescuing all of them is a tremendous work for most of the frightened frogs, so the patriarch seeks help from Frogger, a frog that is fascinated about household objects and the life of people. Frogger accepts the mission and his feats become soon recognized by other frogs, resulting in two allies joining the expedition.

Production[edit]

Frogger in Toy Town was developed in Japan by Q-Games in 2019. After the gane was greenlit by Apple Arcade, it entered production alongside a spin-off in PixelJunk game series, also developed for Apple Arcade.

The game was officially announced during the Apple Special Event on September 10, 2019, and was released during the initial launch of Apple Arcade on September 19. In December 2019, the first major update featuring a new Christmas and Halloween-themed house was released.
