John Daniel Crimmins (May 18, 1844-November 9, 1917) was an American contractor, lawyer, and philanthopist.

Biography and career[edit]

Crimmins was born in Brooklyn in New York City in 1844, the oldest child of Thomas Crimmins and Joanna O'Keefe.[1] His father worked as a landscape gardener for Thomas Addis Emmet and later became a building contractor.[2]

He attended St. Francis Xavier College

In 1864 he entered his father's contracting business as Thomas Crimmins & Son.

Personal life[edit]

He married Lily Lalor in April 1868. They were the parents of ten children. Through his sister Rose Mary Crimmins O'Brien, he was the brother-in-law of Judge Morgan J. O'Brien.

Collecting[edit]

Crimmins was a prominent collector of rare books and manuscripts. This collection was sold at auction after his death.
