Neil MacGregor, former Director of the British Museum, recounts that James Cook, seeking the meeting point between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans to lay out the Northwest Passage of the American continent, landed in Hawaii in 1778. The following year, at the end of a meeting with the local king, the Captain receives as a gift a precious feather helmet that belonged to a tribal chief, which he interprets as a gesture of courtesy. A week later he is killed by the same local population who had paid homage to him. So the feather helmet has become the emblem of the fatal misunderstanding between two peoples.
