PENNIS THE SPORT

The Sport of Pennis

Pennis is a sport which was invented in May 2010 by two Scotsmen and is seen as a mix of tennis, paddle and badminton, the name was derived from combining the two names of tennis and paddle. The game although invented by Scotsman has only ever been played in Spain and to be more specific in Lanzarote.

Pennis is a sport usually played between two players (singles) or on rare occasions between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a solid paddle as opposed to a strung racquet, and a depressurized tennis ball.

The sport takes place in a Pennis cage which is same in dimensions to a paddle court; The court measures 50 feet baseline-to-baseline and 20 feet across, with the service line 3 feet in from the baseline. This creates a service box of 10'x22'. The net is placed at 31 inches. It is constructed of the same materials as tennis courts. All parts of the court and cage can be used in playing a shot in Pennis, which is where the game differs from similar games like tennis and paddle.

Scoring in Pennis, is very much similar to the old badminton scoring system where players can only win points on their own serve. Sets go on until a player reaches 21 points or a winning margin of 2 points if the margin is less than that when a player reaches 21. Matches can be played at the discretion of competitors where either a time frame or best of system can be used. In official competitions a time frame of 6 days with each days play usually averaging 2 sets a day is used, although this will be often be reduced dramatically when extra competitors are involved in the competition.

Pennis was a game invented by two Scotsman Gavin "RAUL" Rogerson and Stewart "JESUS" Forsyth and it was these two men who competed in the inaugural World Pennis Championship tournament. This tournament took place in Lanzarote and lasted from 20th of May 2010 until the 26th of May. Forsyth took the championship on the 26th of May with a 8 sets to 5 victory over Rogerson, with what many have observed the crucial days play taking place on the 23rd of May where Forsyth took both the two sets that day.

Pennis is a sport which is expected to take off in Asia due to many Asian observers attending the inaugural World Pennis Championship. A funny incident took place which is expected to increase popularity in Asia, a young Asian fan wandered into the Pennis cage during the World Championship final and wandered back out with pennis ball. Unlike other sports the finalists took this in good spirits and allowed the fan to keep the ball as a memento of the inaugural final.
