The Society of Jesus is a global religious order of the Catholic Church. It is headed by the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, who reports directly to the pope. The Society is organized into territorial provinces, each of which is headed by a provincial superior, who is responsible to the Superior General. The Jesuits in the United States are currently organized into four provinces.

1833	Maryland Mission raised to the status of province
1863	Missouri Province is created out of the Maryland Province
1879	Maryland Province is renamed the New York Province. Several months later, it is renamed the Maryland-New York Province
1907	New Orleans Province is created out of the Missouri Province
1909	California Province is created
1926	New England Province is created out of the Maryland-New York Province
1928	Chicago Province is created out of the Missouri Province
1932	Oregon Province is created out of the California Province
1943	Maryland-New York Province is split into the Maryland and New York Provinces
1955	Detroit and Wisconsin Provinces are created out of the Chicago Province
1960	Buffalo Province is created out of the New York Province
1969	Buffalo Province merges back into the New York Province
2011	Chicago and Detroit Provinces merge to form the Chicago-Detroit Province
2014	New York and New England Provinces merge to form the USA Northeast Province. Missouri and New Orleans Provinces merge to form the USA Central and Southern Province
