BeenMissing is a cross-platform software suite aimed to help law-enforcement authorities in the mission of finding missing persons. It comprises a cross-platform Mobile App, a Web Site and a number of social networks, all managed from a central maintenance web site
History
[edit]TISA Software had previously developed an Android app named Missing Children Mobile as a donation for Missing Children Argentina, a non-profit organization. Missing Children Mobile was deployed [1] in Argentina at the end of 2011, and the same solution was later offered in donation to Mr Adrian Garcia, sheriff of the Harris County by Mr Ariel Sztern from TISA Software. The Harris County Sheriff Office accepted this initiative [2], and started the BeenMissing project, adding many more capabilities to it.
How it works
[edit]The missing persons cases are created at a control web site and then broadcasted to all the mobile apps, to the public Web Site and to different social networks, which contribute to spread the information. Users can view the cases and anonymously report any sightings, adding photos taken by the users themselves and any other information that may be useful to the authorities.
Components
[edit]Web Portal
[edit]- The HCSO’S Missing Persons Unit uses the web portal facilities to internally manage each case, with photographs and related data. The web site also serves as Portal, enabling visitors to view the cases and report the sightings.
Mobile Apps
[edit]- HCSO BeenMissing is a smartphone app developed for the Android and iOS platforms. It downloads the cases from the Web Portal and displays the photographs in a graphic gallery. The user browses the images, and can access all the published information of any case by tapping its picture.
- When the users think they've sighted one missing person shown in the app, they can press a button to submit a detailed anonymous report. The users can take photographs to include in the report, or use images that already exist in the device.
Facebook App
[edit]- Registered users of the Web Portal can post cases in Facebook if they have installed the BeenMissing Facebook App. The portal has two sharing options: 'Post To Facebook' will post the case to the user's pages, and 'Share with Facebook Friends' will also post the case to all the friends that have installed the app.
Twitter interface
[edit]- This feature is still in the planning stage. The idea is that the Web Portal administrators will be able to generate automated twits for selected cases.
