Parallel Histories is a UK based educational charity that produces educational materials for teachers and students.[1] It promotes the use of a dual-narrative methodology to teach the history of conflicts from different perspectives, utilizing videos and eBooks[2][3][4][5]

History & background

[edit]

Parallel Histories was founded by Julian Richer and Michael Davies in 2017,[1] during a trip of Lancaster Royal Grammar School teachers to Israel and the West Bank, funded by a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust fellowship.[6][7] Michael Davis came to know the difference in narrative regarding Israel-Palestine conflict which he intended to incorporate in curriculum to be taught in UK schools.[6] This dual narrative methodology was partly inspired by the book ‘Side by Side Parallel Histories of Israel-Palestine’.[6][8][9]

Besides Israel-Palestine conflict, Parallel Histories also produce resources on Northern Ireland’s history,[10][11] as well as Russia-Ukraine War.[12]

Partnerships

[edit]

Parallel Histories’ educational resources have been quality-checked by Educate Against Hate and are listed on its website.[13] It is a member of the Good Business Charter.[14]

The charity has delivered training through the Princes Teaching Institute (PTI),[15] and is part of an Erasmus+ programme connecting schools in France, Ireland and the U.K.[16][17][18][19]

Parallel Histories maintains partnerships with Solutions not Sides[20] and Pearson.[21][22] and has run debating programmes in partnership with the Naval Children’s Charity,[23] PwC,[24] and veterans’ charity Forward Assist.[25]

In 2023, Parallel Histories marked Good Relations Week by running debating events in the Stormont Assembly for schools from Northern Ireland.[26][27]
