Which article are you evaluating?

Latin American liberation theology

Why you have chosen this article to evaluate?

This was the first article that came up when searching for information on what the class Latin American liberation theology during the Cold War would be covering.

Evaluate the article

Lead Section: While the overviewed of the subject is mostly in the first sentence, it quickly becomes bogged down by names of people who have used the phrase “Liberation Theology.” The flow of the section steers away from the subject and what the article will later be covering. If these people are important, they should be given their own section. As for telling the reader what will be covered in the article, there is almost no lead in aside from the “Contents” box.

Content: The content follows a logical path starting with the subject’s history through to the reactions felt from “Liberation Theology.” The “Practice” section of the article could be broken up a little differently since the subcategory of “Sandinista Nicaragua” and “Indigenous Brazil” are so heavily covered they could be made into their own sections, or the use of bullet points should be made to better differentiate the subcategories from the sub-subcategories.

Tone and Balance: The tone remains neutral throughout the article, and retains a viewpoint of an outside observer. For fringe viewpoints, there is little information given. This could be entirely due to a lack documentation or interest in other parts of the world. The bulk of topic only concerns Latin America, as the title suggests, and the Catholic Church. Outliers have little stake in the issue.

Sources and References: While I did not check every reference link for the article There is a surprising large amount of digitally published short articles. There is one web article referenced twice ("Former Soviet Spy: We Created Liberation Theology") from two websites at different times. There was also a couple of articles referenced using the “Wayback Machine,” with broken links. The References section could use of a consistent referencing format.

Organization and Writing Quality: As I have stated before the article could do with some altered organization. For the quality of writing some improvement could be made. There are minor punctuation and spelling errors throughout the article.

Images and Media: The article only has one image; it is a map of where the Solentiname Islands are located. The image begins on the same line that it is mentioned making it easier to locate in terms of context.
