Richard Blackshire the author of New Town Naughty Boy has lived in the new town of Hemel Hempstead his entire life. Born in 1954, Richard grow up within this New Town and witnessed many changes taking place within the local society. As Richard struggled at school specifically with reading and writing the notion of writing anything for public consumption was never a thought until later in life. It was only during his 50s that it was confirmed he was Dyslexic. After discovering that one of his old school friends Reg Stickings had written a book about Northern Soul (Searching for Soul) and consequently discovered his friend was also Dyslexic, Richard decided to write his autobiography. New Town Naughty Boy is a humorous book about the exploits of a boy living in a new town during the 1950’s 60s and 70s. It takes you through the authors childhood and into his teens where growing up seemed challenging. The book is fast paced and switches between social historical details of how things were at the time mixed with the authors actual stories. It’s a combination of personal antidotes and reminiscence about the times after world war 2 when the displacement from war torn London had an impact on certain home counties small towns.
