Consumer Activism Draft[edit]

Movements[edit]

#Boycottstarbucks: After releasing their new winter-themed set of christmas cups in 2015, Donald Trump declared a suggestion to boycott Starbucks Coffee. [1] Trump was an influencer in this movement as a presidential candidate in 2015, and in this same speech he hinted that Starbucks was removing the christmas out of the christmas-holiday season[2].

Celebrity Endorsements[edit]

Donald Trump: Donald Trump played a large role in promoting various consumer boycotts and consumer activist situations, such as with the Starbucks Boycott, where Trump suggested a boycott due to the Christmas cup controversy[3], as well as calling for a boycott of the NFL due to kneeling protests during the national anthem in 2017.[4]

Lena Dunham: After the company Uber removed price surges following a taxi hour of solidarity for the immigration ban at the JFK airport, there was almost instantly a backlash from thousands of Uber users to delete the app, and Dunham engaged in the boycott by sending out a tweet indicating that she had deleted the app. [5]

Consumer Activism (Lead Section and drafting)[edit]

Add more photos: By including photos from recent events it will bring light onto the dim Wikipedia page that it currently is. There are currently only two photos of old consumer activity. By improving the "Movements"section by adding more recent and popular movements I will include photos; namely of the boycott Starbucks and Target movements. Along with that, I will add a section based off celebrity influence and/or endorsements featuring a photo of a tweet and comments made by Donald Trump[6]. Along with that, I will add Donald Trump to the "criticism" section, as he criticized the movement and encouraged his followers to as well.[7] I will also leave a section on medias influence on the movements- including famous tweets and posts online that helped the word spread from these large movement[8]s, along with hashtag information.[9] Adding more to the "history" section will also be beneficial as it is clear that it does not provide extensive information or a good timeline of events. Along with that, the history section may not even be something necessary as the whole page should be embodying the history. There should also be links to citations on all four "Lead section" key points, not just two. Along with that, the current stated four aims of the movements do not seem necessary to include and seem rather philosophical and should be more straight forward if used for the general public looking on Wikipedia. Once again, adding photos and updating key factors of the page such as the movements timeline will greatly increase page views as well as useful information.

Finalizing My Topic[edit]

The topic for Wikipedia editing that I have officially chosen to work on is "consumer activism". I plan on contributing more instances of consumer boycotts/activism as the page currently only lists a few different consumer movements. I may also want to add a selection for celebrities who have endorsed some of these movements as well as social media's influence on them- which directly relates to my topic.

Article Evaluation (submitted previously on talk page)[edit]

(article: Online social movement)

This article did a good job of defining both online/social media and social movements aspects of online social movements. There was a mix of positive and negative aspects, which shows that the article was unbiased and fair. They also made sure to include good examples of online social movements, such as #kony2012. The area where they could have expanded on was the section where they list different notable figures in online social movements, where they could have listed more examples and more of what they did. The references seemed to all be fine, but one of them was from a personal blog, so it may not be extremely reliable.

Choose possible topics[edit]

  1. Boycott: There needs to be a section designated to social media's effects on boycotts and the usage of the internet in some of the greatest 21st century boycott movements. Along with that, there needs to be a specific section for consumer boycotts which I would like to add, and there should be a greater timeline posted somewhere on the page for a list of the most historic boycotts. Finally, there could also be some more featured photos added to the page to make it more eye-catching.
  2. Social movement: There should definitely be a section devoted to social medias impact on social movements, if not its own page. I would like to add a completed list of a majority of social movements, both in historic and modern times. This timeline or list of social movements is important because it gives the reader an idea of how useful social movements are in changing the world around us. I would also like to add more sources for the facts on the page, as to create a more reputable page.
  3. Consumer behaviour: I would like to add a section on consumer boycott because there is not one currently, yet there is a section on influences on consumers. Adding a photo to this section would also be beneficial in showing how protests play a role in consumer behavior.
