The East Midlands Gateway is a business park near Kegworth, Leicestershire in the English East Midlands specializing in Logistics. It comprises Distribution centers with a purpose-built rail freight terminal, making this distribution hub one of the UK's first inland ports.[1] It is officially known as the Segro Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway (SLPEMG).[2]

The SLPEMG is located to the west of the M1 motorway, just south of Junction 24; and adjacent to northern edge of East Midlands Airport. The site is closely situated to the west of Kegworth; east of Castle Donington and south of Lockington villages. In the wider area, it lies within the triangle formed by Leicester, Nottingham and Derby. It should not be confused with the East Midlands Distribution Centre (EMDC) which lies to the northwest of Castle Donington village.

Construction was largely completed in 2019

Local objections

[edit]
Site (to right of EMA) before construction

There were local objections to the proposal leading to the formation of the "J24 Action Group".[3] The main reason for the objections was that the site was green countryside and that other brownfield sites were available. Indeed there was support for what was seen as the positive environmental impact of moving freight from road to rail if it adopted such a site. The objections included a petition to the then Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP, which attained 1,331 signatures.[4]
