The Largest Painted Mural Stamp in the United States is located in Fresno, California and was created by muralist FranCisco Vargas. The huge stamp reads FRESNO and within each letter are registered historical landmarks, some of the future and of the past. It also includes Fresno icons, tributes to cultural diversity and different branches of the military. The first largest painted mural stamp was painted in Pontiac, Illinois on a white mounted lattice based 8’ X 24’ billboard next to the Vermilion River. It is located off the Historic Route 66 in downtown Pontiac, featuring the river with the Swinging Bridges and flour mill along side of it.

This was a Walldog project hosted by sign painter Bill Diaz and family. Vargas to be one of the project leaders at this meet. Walldogs are sign painters/artists who have been painting signs and murals of advertisements on walls throughout the country on sides of buildings, barns, or anywhere paint will stick.

In October 2013 Vargas was approached by Donavan G. Byrn of Creative Fresno and asked if he would be interested in painting a new mural in the downtown area, and was formally invited by Kate Borders of the Downtown Fresno Partnership to create a mural on the side of The Business Journal located in downtown Fresno. Vargas created a sketch for another painted mural stamp that would be even larger than the one in Pontiac, IL.

Process[edit]

Vargas started out by pressure washing and prepping the 34’ X 125’ wall. Another sign painter Richard Bustamante also helped prep and paint the background. The initial image included the perforations of the stamp, setting up and laying out the word FRESNO, the 2 cent and 1885. Several local artists were invited to paint different subjects in the letters.

F: As Fresno is located in the center of the state and between two of the most famous National Parks, he started with Yosemite in the F along with author William Saroyan William Saroyan, the original Sun-Maid raisin girl Lorraine Collet Peterson, All America City shield, the new California State University, Fresno Library, The Fresno City Hall, and a statue “The Visit” made by Clement Renzi, in Spanish Fresno means "Ash Tree."

R: In the R his daughter, Christina Vargas Bertrand, who happened to stop by to visit him, helped out painting the new African Adventure. Other elements are Storyland from Roeding Park, Ceasar Chavez, the Fresno Entrance Sign, a Statue Coatlique fabricated by Ernesto Palomino, the entrance sign of Huntington Blvd, the old Fresno Brewery Building, one of the Original Printing Presses from the Business Journal, Fresno Chandler Executive Airport, Dr. Chester Rowell, Huntington Lake, the Fresno State Bulldog mascot, a statue from the Fresno Art Museum. Artist Mauro Carrera gave him a hand painting the image of the Warnors Theatre.

E: The E has the future Fresno Aquarium, the Fresno Amtrak Train Station, a BT-13 Plane mounted upside down, the Old Fresno Water Tower, educator Elizabeth Terronez, boxer Gabe Terronez, the Meux home, The Tower Theatre, statue David of Sassoon fabricated by Artist Samelian Varaz, the Buddist Temple and Dragon parade from Chinatown.

S: The S includes Randy Williams, a 1972 Gold Medal Olympian, Dr. Kikuo Taira, the Blossom Trail, Mahatma Ghandi, and a Hmong Girl. Artist Rudy Contreras Jr. designed and helped paint the skyline from a concept by Vargas, Fulton Berry Fulton Mall (Fresno)is in the top of the skyline, Vargas mother Della Chacon, Mexican Folklorico Dancers, Actress Audra McDonald, Astronaut Barbara Morgan and the future High Speed Bullet Train.

N: The N includes the Veterans Memorial Auditorium with a POW banner hanging on the building, with the Military branches marching. Dale's Coffee can logo in a refurbished effect. POW highly decorated combat pilot war hero Gregory Pappy Boyington artist Ma Ly helped paint General Vang Pao, below him, on the top of the tank, is Vargas father on the tank Raul Chacon, on left stroke of the N is one of the corner Winged Lions from the Security Bank, on the right stroke of the N is Friant Dam, below that is the Clock Tower. Artist Stephanie Allison lent a hand painting the Fresno Horse Races, the two Native Americans are Redbone legends Pat and Lolly Vegas, legendary race car driver Bill Vukovich, last of the medicine men Clarence Atwell Jr. "Kaya.", the Forestiere Underground Gardens, the Raisin King M. Theadore Kearney.

O: The O includes the Central Pacific Railroad logo, Chinese Railroad Workers, Vargas first self portrait, Chukchansi Park Stadium, 49er Tim McDonald, Fresno’s first lady Fire Chief Kerri Donis. Vargas designed the young lady with the fruit and vegetable basket, a Electronic Recyclers logo, artist Nigel Robertson painted Frank Caglia, the Farm Workers, and the section of the Fulton Mall along with the Greek Dancers and the Boy with the Leaking Boot. Artist Patti Calvert helped Vargas paint the list of largest giant sequoias.

Unveiling[edit]

The mural was started in December of 2013 and completed at the end of May 2014, and was unveiled on June 7, 2014. The event was classified as the largest painting unveiling in Fresno history. Music was provided by Fernando Verdialez, Vinnie Mars, Carlos Perez, and Lee Wilson of the band Jam Bone. Video/photographer Frank Bonilla captured the unveiling on video.
