Garinger High from 1996 to 2008 held the state's longest losing streak, but on Monday won a football game, to the Wildcats' faithful, it felt like heaven.
The Wildcats beat West Mecklenburg 31-12 after trailing 12-0 at halftime. Garinger picked up four forfeit wins in 2007 but hadn't won a game on the field since 2002. That on-field streak ended Monday at 61 games. It was Garinger's first win on the field since beating Myers Park 20-13 on Oct. 11, 2002. “I can't tell you how this feels,” Garinger coach Chris Carter said. “It's been a long time coming, baby. “I was wondering when it was going to come and it finally did.” Garinger running back Maurice Bethea sparked the second-half rally. He finished with 135 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries. Quarterback Marquez Stanley was 4-for-6 for 69 yards and one touchdown. He rushed for two scores. That year the Wildcats went on to become the Queen City 4A Champs. Coach Chris Carter did the impossible winning at Garinger was thought of as impossible. <http://thetandd.com/sports/edisto-football-hires-carter-from-lake-marion/article_1f6fed66-5b9f-58c5-b4c9-72e6b474ff7e.html> <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeAd0xNy3C4>
