Background[edit]

The "British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith and The Warlord began feuding in late 1990; they competed against each other on numerous house shows in both standard wrestling matches and arm wrestling contests. Their feud continued into 1991, with a televised arm wrestling match on the February 4 episode of WWF Prime Time Wrestling and a full nelson challenge on the February 17 episode of WWF Wrestling Challenge. After Slick, The Warlord's manager interfered in the challenge, Smith and The Warlord faced each other in a match at WrestleMania VII. Smith won the match, but the rivalry continued. The "Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich had also faced The Warlord in a series of matches at house shows. Paul Roma, who developed a rivarly with Ricky Steamboat through their series of house show matches. A six-man match was scheduled for SummerSlam, with Smith, Von Erich, and Steamboat wrestling The Warlord, Roma, and Roma's partner in the tag team Power and Glory, Ray Fernandez.

Leading up to SummerSlam, Bret Hart was legitimately informed by WWF owner Vince McMahon that he would win the WWF Intercontinental Championship. In his biography, Hart explains that he was unsure whether to believe McMahon because of broken promises in the past, but that he came to trust the plan during a photo shoot for WWF Magazine on August 10 when Hart was asked to pose for pictures with the title belt. Curt Hennig, who portrayed champion Mr. Perfect, met with Hart prior to the match to suggest that Hart kick out of Perfect's finishing move, the Perfect Plex, and celebrate his victory by tearing off the singlet that Perfect wore over his wrestling attire.

Aftermath[edit]

Slick get involved in the match, and Smith performed a running powerslam on him; Smith won the match by countout when The Warlord carried Slick backstage. The two wrestlers were on opposite sides during a match at Survivor Series 1991, where The Warlord's team was victorious.
