[1]Attorney Claudy Gassant was born on June 18, 1965. He was a militant lawyer, former Secretary of State for Justice, former government commissioner, former judge, former director general of the Anti-Corruption Unit (ULCC). He stood out by investigating the case of the assassination of journalist Jean Dominique and during his visit to the Port-au-Prince prosecutor’s office by summoning alleged smugglers. He died on July 31, 2021 in the Dominican Republic under suspicious circumstances. He was 56 years old.

Education and Career After a brilliant training in French Universities and at the National School of Magistracy in Bordeaux, Me Claudy Gassant, career Magistrate and Diplomat, held in turn the functions of Judge, Investigating Judge, trainer at the School of the Haitian Judiciary and Government Commissioner, before entering diplomacy as Minister Counsellor. This magistrate, very publicized, worked on burning cases that marked the annals of Haitian justice. Apart from the file of the assassination of the Haitian journalist, Jean Leopold Dominique who made him very famous at the beginning of the 21st millennium, Claudy Gassant rightly nicknamed by the daily “Le Nouvelliste” the TERRIBLE CHILD of Haitian justice , dealt competently and with integrity with the case of the Carrefour Feuille massacre by the police; the Baby of Nanoune Myrhile disappeared at the General Hospital, the assassination of Senator Toussaint in Delmas and many others having hit the headlines. Forced into exile in the United States in January 2002 under the Presidency of Jean Bertrand Aristide, after having escaped several assassination attempts, the Magistrate accepted in July 2006 the post of Government Commissioner offered to him by the President Rene Preval, to whom he is close.

For two years at the Public Prosecutor's Office (2006-2008) in Port-au-Prince, Gassant marked his career by establishing and enhancing the authority of the Public Ministry, relocating and modernizing the prosecution of the Court of First Instance enhanced the image of justice. For the first time, Haiti was equipped with a completely air-conditioned, computerized Public Prosecutor's Office, with Wireless Internet, fax, telephones and more than fifteen vehicles allowing the Public Ministry to travel to the crime scenes.

The creation of the hotline, making the Public Prosecutor's Office operational 24/7, has made it possible to reduce illegal and arbitrary arrests as much as possible and facilitate the presentation within the legal time limit of persons detained by the police.
