I am watching a segment of PBS's NOW about preventive detention in the UK.

  • Carey Bolavont (sp?) a UK citizen under a control order, was detained under a control order in 2006, when he tried to fly to Syria. He traveled with a companion, who had a brother who was being tried for terrorism.

Carey says he didn't know anything about his friend's brother.

    • Frequent police raids broke up his marraige.
    • He lost all his friends avoid him, in order to try to avoid having the suspicion against him rub off on them.
    • He ran away from his control order, for five weeks. When he phoned to turn himself in, he was confused over the
    • A friend of his mother's, in a drunken state, had phoned Scotland Yard, to express her fear that he had been turned into a dangerous person.
    • After two years a judge who had access to the classified evidence, ordered his control order to be lifted, because there was no meaningful justification
  • Hussein Al Samamra, a married Palestinian, remains under a control order. He doesn't know why.
    • He wears a wireless security anklet.
    • He is allowed out two hours in the morning, and in the afternoon. He has to phone a monitoring center first.
    • His control order was limiting for his family. His pregnant wife tried to kill herself due to the stress of her husband's preventive detention.
    • The NOW team wasn't allowed in his apartment to interview him. They were allowed to interview him in the hallway to his apartment.
  • The segment contained multiple clips from an interview with Phillipe Sands.
