From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Westland Institute was a research association based in Hokitika, New Zealand and founded in the 19th Century

The New Zealand Institute Act 1867 set up a single organisation "for the advancement of Science and Art in New Zealand." It established a subsidiary network of Provincial Institutes or Philosophical Societies around New Zealand whose to promote the arts and sciences and learning in general. Many of the Provincial Institutes operated museums and libraries.[1]

The Westland Institute acted as a forum for discussion and debate and a place where members could receive updates on the world at large, as Hokitika was remote and somewhat isolated from the rest of New Zealand, let alone the world.[1]

The Westland Institute was instrumental in the founding of the Carnegie Free Public Library in Hokitika. (expand Carnegie Library article w Teichelmann refs)
