Taxonomy Outline:
One of the most recent researches suggests that the taxa of Lagothrix lagotricha is one of two species, the other being L. flavicauda, under the Genus Lagothrix and has four sub-species: L. l. Lagotricha, L. l. poeppigii, L. l. cana, and L. l. lugens(Botero, Steven 2014).
Some researchers believe the sub-species of Lagothrix lagotricha should be moved to a species level, resulting in four species under Lagothrix: L. lagotricha, L. poeppigii, L. cana, and L. lugens. It was also suggested that species flavicauda be moved under a new Genus called Oreonax(Groves C. 2001).
Lagotricha with four subspecies and flavicauda as a species(Fooden, Jack 1963).
Rough Draft:
The taxonomy of the species Lagothrix lagotricha is still debated. One way to classify it is as one of two species under the Genus Lagothrix with four sub-species. These sub-species would include: L. l. lagotricha, L. l. lugens, L. l. cana, and L. l. poeppgigii [1]. Later on, a revision was suggested to move all of the sub-species of Lagothrix lagotricha to species level. This was suggested after craniodental morphology research was analyzed, and the species Lagothrix flavicauda was moved under a monotypic Genus called Oreonax[2]. One reason for the indefinite taxa of Lagothrix lagotricha is due to morphological and molecular data resulting in different results[3]. Despite the controversy, larger sets of data could help find more results in future research. References:
