Depth chart[edit]

The depth chart below attempts to illustrate players who will appear at certain positions during the 2014 season. As the starting formation in Alabama's games will change, there will be a different mix of personnel on the field based on the formation. The illustrations below are for a single set back scheme on offense and a 3-3 formation on defense.

Nick Saban many times has referred to finding the rotation at each position as opposed to finalizing a depth chart. He has also mentioned using a "production points system" during the spring and fall practices to evaluate players. This points system for cornerbacks, for instance, includes tackles, knockdowns, passes defended, sacks, tackles for loss, caused fumbles and recovered fumbles.[1]

(DEPTH CHART NOTATIONS: Name, Year at Alabama/total years of eligibility)

What learned after week 1:
Battle/rotation at right guard between Leon Brown and Alphonse Taylor
Chris Black is the fourth receiver (took place of injured DeAndrew White)
Eddie Jackson was just cleared to play (third string CB, DNP in week 1)
Redshirt freshman Robert Foster below freshman Cam Sims
Derrick Henry is the #2 running back

What learned after week 3:
Alabama test drove the Catapult GPS system last season and agreed to use the company full time this year. The technology uses GPS, gyroscopes and magnetometers to measure an athlete’s movement and exertion during competition. Tracking Jackson’s “explosive movement,” Saban said he was able to see Jackson was ready to go. [5]

What learned after Tennessee game:
Saban said Leon Brown is best tackle after Robinson and Shepherd. Backup center Bozeman played when Brown shifted to left tackle.

What learned at ACC Championship game:
CBS announcer Gary Danielson charts every play from the previous games

Variables and questions for Ohio State game:
Is Reuben Foster injured (did not play previous two games)? Does it matter (he is mainly on kickoff coverage, had a good hit against LSU, tackles with his helmet)?
Will outside LB Devall play? Dickson has done well in his place/interchangeable.
Was Alabama saving Yeldon in Missouri game, or will Henry become featured back?
