The college is an American, NCATE-accredited[2] college of education (COE) operated by Grand Valley State University (GVSU). It is located at the university's Robert C. Pew Campus in downtown Grand Rapids in the western part of the U.S. state of Michigan.
Programs
[edit]The college's graduate and undergraduate (preservice) programs lead to provisional certification, professional certification, certificate renewal, endorsements and approvals[3] as well as graduate degrees in education. As of 2010, the COE offered 28 major and minor programs approved for teacher certification by the Michigan Department of Education.[1]. It provides undergraduate programs in elementary (K-6), secondary (6-12) and special education as well as graduate programs leading to a Master of Education (MEd) in Educational Technology, Higher Education, Instruction and Curriculum, Literacy Studies (TESOL, Reading), School Counseling, Special Education and College Student Affairs Leadership [4] as well as a post-Masters Educational Specialists (Ed.S) degree in Leadership.[5] While the College does not currently offer its own doctoral programs, through a joint agreement between Grand Valley and Eastern Michigan University (EMU), it is party to a cooperative doctoral program in educational leadership[6] that allows all of the coursework from the educational specialist degree to be credited toward the requirements of the doctorate in education (Ed.D) in the GVSU/EMU program.
The graduate program offerings and the corresponding student enrollment in the College of Education are the largest at Grand Valley State University. For the 2010-2011 academic year, of the 3024 degree-seeking graduate students at GVSU, 44.8% were registered in the COE's graduate programs.[7] Of the 998 graduate degrees awarded in that year by the university, 446 (44.7%) were from Education.[7] In fact, during the previous academic year, 2009-2010, the college awarded 544 Professional Certificates, 138 Graduate Endorsements, and 429 M.Ed. Degrees.[1]
