Overview

[edit]

Between 1845 and 1917 143,939 indentured Indian immigrants were transported to Trinidad to replace the labour of freed African slaves by the Slavery Abolition Act 1833. After being processed through Nelson Island, indentured Indians were assigned to various estates where they were employed primarily in sugar and cocoa cultivation.
