The Jack Welch Management Institute at Strayer University is an online educational institution founded in 2009 and based in the United States, offering an executive Master of Business Administration degree and executive certificates for working adults. It was founded by Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric.

History[edit]

The Jack Welch Management Institute was developed in 2009 by former GE CEO Jack Welch in partnership with Chancellor University.[2] Welch, having previously taught a course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology sought an opportunity to reach more students than he was able through classroom teaching,[3] and in 2009 agreed to partner with Chancellor University to create a business school aimed at providing leadership training to managers and executives.[4] The Jack Welch Management Institute launched in June 2009,[5] and classes began in January 2010.[6]

Acquisition by Strayer University[edit]

Seeking to expand operations, in April 2011 Welch approached Strayer University, which had a larger geographic base and an interest in developing an executive MBA program, about acquiring the institute.[7][1][8] In November 2011, Welch and Strayer Education, Inc. announced that the Jack Welch Management Institute had been acquired by Strayer University.[9] The deal to acquire the institute closed in December 2011.[10]

Programs[edit]

The Jack Welch Management Institute offers an accredited executive Master of Business Administration[4] and executive certificates[9] covering various business-related topics[11] through online classes.[5] The executive MBA is a two-year program and the certificates are six-week programs.[12]

Welch developed the curriculum, drawing from his management experience as CEO of GE and his experience teaching managers and executives at GE's Leadership Development Center.[5][4] In addition to helping shape the program's curriculum, Welch holds the title of Distinguished Professor at the institute.[13] In 1999 Welch was named "Manager of the Century" by Fortune magazine.[14] He regularly addresses students via video stream, to share his views on current business events.[15][16] At the end of each term students participate in a video conference with Welch.[16]

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, the affordable tuition for the executive MBA program offered through the Jack Welch Management Institute and its flexible schedule makes the program attractive to people who are currently employed but want to earn an MBA.[5]

Welch has stated that he plans to grow the Jack Welch Management Institute into the number one online business school in the world by 2016.[3][17]
